I have 2 10 inch JL audio w7's and want to make a custom box for my car.. what do you guys think I should go with.. ALL wooden with a vent or an all wooden sealed box or a fiber glass box? and does anyone have any pictures or steps they took to build a box?

a sealed box is normally better for sound..unless you can't make the box big enough for the air specks on that sub, then i would port it, a fiberglass one would be awesome if u can do it.

the w7's require alot more volume for the box so i would go to an audio shop and have them custom build a box for those subs with tuned ports to save a little trunk room. It shouldnt cost tooo much... like $135?

actually...a ported box needs to be larger than a sealed box. the ported box specs for a w7 is about 2 cuft. a ported box should be around 1 cuft. its easier to build a wood box thatll be sturdy enough for a w7, and it needs to be at LEAST 1" thick MDF...i usually use two layers of 3/4" MDF....sandwiched with wood glue. thatll make a really sturdy box..one that can stand up to the force you can get from a w7, not to mention a pair of W7s.

^ :agree: And i just sent him the pdf on how large he needs to make the boxes, both sealed and ported. Following JL Audios recommendations.

By he way, dave, did photoshop end up working for you sir? I know you've been busy, but just seeing if ya have.

By the way, if you or your buddy can't do the fiberglassing. I can make the box for you. You can choose to either have them joined together, or they can be seperate.

i agree with the diagram, a good L shaped port will make the w7 come alive

and for the ones i've built for a few kickers, with the same style port, i take a router and round off the edges of the wood that make up the port. in that pic, where it says "slot length" at the end of that arrow. and at the end of the "extension length" section of wood. kicker suggests it, im sure it would help with JLs too.

yeah, make the edges round, and in the L make the turn slanted instead of 90deg, it'll kill most of the port noise

i use a similar design but the port on mine is in the middle of the box and both subs use the same airspace, look at my cardomain for some pics

a well built box for two subs might run you $350 or so...some places do it for cheap, but make sure its being built to spec AND it will fit in your car. also make sure the wood is strong enough and they seal the box up well with silicone.

Yep, or for about 25 dollars for 3/4" MDF board and a few other things, you could make that box to spec.
Alot cheaper, and you can guarantee you did it right.
