View Full Version : What's broke on your grand am as of now?

RocketFast321
03-07-2005, 10:12 AM
1. My dash is starting to come up on the driver side by the windshield
2. My passenger side window is getting slower and so is my driver side.
3. The rubber windshield trim on the bottom is starting to flake off it's black paint, and is loose.
4. The front end suspension makes noises when the engine is cold.
5. I wonder about this, does the dimmer switch has a light behind it on the 99+? If it does what kind of bulb.

I think my fan switch is on the fritz......seems to want to overheat, and the fan doesn't turn on.....

Well, I've got a mirror missing, does that count?

I just had the Passlock assembly and the blower resistor replaced like a month ago.

what's a passlock assembly?

Brandon

normal wear and tear... rock from the semi nicked the bumper and a couple tiny scratches from pebbles and stuff... other then that works like a champ.

just never heard of a "passlock assembly". passlock voltage from the ignition switch goes to the PCM to be read. so where"s the assembly?

Ehhh, just called it the wrong thing. They changed the ignition assembly (I think) and I guess the sensor.

Hmmmm,... funny thing is we've had this car for close to 5 years now & absolutely nothing broke yet. Ok, I guess my cabin vent in the trunk is screwed but it's a small, cheap fix. People try & say that jap cars, German cars, etc. last longer. I don't know what to tell em but I've had many, many cars & this is the most trouble free car I have ever had.

WOW, my car needs lotsa work.
SES light is on
Tires (Hoping to have done in the spring)
Alignment (Hoping to have done in the spring)
Struts (Hoping to have done in the spring)
molding around back bumper
scratches on passenger side rear tire area
And the paint could use either another paint job OR a serious clay bar job. I'd be leaning towards a paint job though, :D
Fussy driver window... sometimes it will go down and not come back up, or stay up and not go down.

LIM is leaking slowly

Minor dings and the car coudl use a paint job, one major cancer spot that I will have an estimate done for sometime this year. Its 10 years old I think its getting to the point of no return, cant get money out of it, so time to start driving it

well where do i start? ill just do it like this. keep in mind that this car is paid for and i work 12 hrs a day so i dont have much time to fix it and she has 140,000 miles on her

1 driver side window motor is burnt out. got a new one ordered though
2 moonroof motor is shot they want to much money for a new one
3 passenger side mirror broke off (some stupid drunk ass broke it off at the bar i work part time at)
4 bent rear axle
5 broken left rear rim (happened the same night i bent the axle)
6 bent driver side exaust mount ( also same night as i bent the axle)
7 and the check engine light just came on today

-My driver's side mirror is being held on by a screw. (I knocked it off while detailing the car at a show) :(

-None of the gauges light up at night, not even the A/C controls.

-Blower Resistor.

-And I just got the LIM leak fixed.

my a/c and heat won't work unless they are on level 3 or higher. i know it's a simple fix but i'm just too damn lazy and it hasn't put me at an inconvience since i normally cruise with windows down no matter the temp., unless it's raining. then i just put on front defroster to get just enough cool or warm air that i need on level 3.

jeez, i cant even remember everything that is wrong.. but to name a few:
-drums squeak
-needs a fuel filter
-paint has seen better days, someone owned my trunk lid with something abrasive, and same with the roof...
-interior just got owned by people with dirty shoes, damn the rain!
-grinds engaging reverse, just a little bit
-custom painted shifter knob is becoming slowly uncustom, I used the wrong paint :(
-shifter knob is loose ever since I took it off the first time to paint it :(
-trunk light doesnt work
-keyless entry was lost by the previous owner
-my clear corner bulbs arent exactly clear, they are retarded yellowish
-wipers are dying slowsly but surely
-some interior trim pieces are loose/warped on my driverside... damn previous owner again!
-dont even have original keys to the car
-previous owner also OWNED the driverside door around the keyhole, I guess he couldnt find the hole EVER, his wife is probably not too happy with him...
-3 holes from ripping off the front mounted license plate holder, need to bondo em or something, but its looks considerably better than having a huge black rectangle on the fronmt of my car.

i think that is most of it... I need $$$$$$$$$

1. Lower intake manifold gasket (replaced it myself and the front head gasket since I broke a bolt off in the head, which I was able to savage at a machine shop)
2. Driver side front window comes down crooked (I think the clip broke on the rear regulator) -- still needs fixed
3. Blower resistor -- just fixed
4. Tail light bulbs
5. I know I need some new suspension bushings/ball joints probably. I'll tear into it when I get my suspension upgrade parts.

I just got new tires to put my 16" wheels back on the front. And got the ball joint for the driver side. Need to put that in. I have a bad sensor sending an SES code but can't get it read at autozone because it's the ODB 1.5. I have one dent in the right rear quarter I can't get to from the inside. And my driver front speaker cuts out when I hit a bump. I'm going to fix that and the broken pieces in my driver door panel tomorrow. I might need new struts up front. other than that I'm all set. (I see the light at the end of the tunnel) But I will need a new egr valve before next year's inspection. It just passed by 3/1000 this year.

90,000 miles on my Grand Am
1. second time i replaced the passenger side lower ball joint, Wish i had an air chisel the first tine i did it!!
2. Door lock switches don't work on either side but they lock when i put it in drive.
3. Rust on drivers door i'll grind out this spring.
4. Cig lighter doesn't work. It stopped working after the door lock switches.
5. ABS light stays on, Passes inspection so i'm not worried.
6. Blower motor, If i open the hood and bang on the casing with the snow brush it turns on. only need to do that in cold weather.
7. Ya know what 16" tires cost!!!! sorry i had to vent! hahaha
8. crack in the passenger side of dashboard because i used to be able to get the blower motor to work from pounding with my fist there.
9. Driver side window needs help when i crank it into position. Also a spring/ summer project.
10. Glove box with the handy cup holders always stays open cause the hinge is slightly twisted.

Not a bad car over all. That V6 still has power!!
of all things wrong i've mentioned i can still stomp on the gas and accererate without any hesitation or stutter.

Ive already had a new engine put in, blew up at 50K, had to have window motor fixed.

But as of right now, the heater only works on full blast, the interior lights all flicker when going over bumps, and sometimes never even turn on, (fuses are ok).

1) Rust! Just started this winter and is getting worse quickly. Have some above the wheel well next to the fuel door, front bottom corner of the rear left well, and I'm sure the front drivers side fender is being eaten from underneath right where the trim covers it up.

2)Spring in the locking mechanism is busted, causing the door to relock every time i take my key out of the lock. (Locked myself out 3 times already!:D ) Also disconnected the mechanism that turns the dome light on when i pull the driverside handles because it was stuck open causing the light to get stuck on if the door was locked.

3) Tons of little chips and nicks that I need to fix come spring. Also need to repain mirrors

4) SE trim on driver side door won't clip on the ends for somereason

5) Decent crack in the rear bumper from being rear-ended (I hate being rear ended because there is nothing you can do about it!) Actually looking to get GT trim and rockers in the near future.

6) Need to replace the power steering belt

7) Front suspension groans when going over bumps

8) Door panels rattle like crazy now (when driving) after "prefessional" installation of speakers. Nice job guys. :roll2:

9) Need to get new tires in the spring looks like from the low treads.

10) Serious need of exterior and interior detailing

11)Trunk leaking from somewhere

Just bought the car at the beginning of winter so I'm dying for spring so i can start working on it

Lets see:
1. My hood release lever for the engine broke off (got the part today though to replace it)
2. My blower is starting to make a weird noise and may be going out.
3. I have the stock radio back in (since im about to trade it in) and 1 rear speaker has the bass and midrange part of the speaker not working.
4. Clips in one of the door pannels and some interior trim clips are broken
5. Rims (2 rims are slightly bent from my accident a long time ago)

My car is actualy running really good right now though. The best its run in quite awhile.

Update: I got my left balljoint replaced this week. I also got a metal rod like the end of a small screw driver stuck in my left front tire. It went in right above the wheel. I had to replace that tire. And I had already replaced the back tires. So I have all four 16 inch rims back on. And the carpet finally dried on the passenger side. Thanks the 70's temps this week. so the interior is all back together. I still have to replace the driver door skin because of all the broken screw tabs. And I have two small dents in each of the rear quarters. One I might be able to pull out with a suction cup on the right. But the left is a definite gash (not major though) that will need more tlc to fix. But it isn't bad so I'm not worrying about it. I'm going to get it scanned next week to fix that prob with the ses light coming on and I'm going to replace the oil sending unit after that and that'll be it. Well almost. It needs an alignment. And I think the front struts need replacing. But that's when I get the taxes back.

2. it takes a friggin half hour to defrost the winshield

3. the exhaust tips are rusted

4. my pinstripes are starting to come off

5. sometimes the passenger side door doesnt open from the outside (even though its unlocked).

However...i do have things that i plan on doing

1. Take it to a professional detailer, get the whole thing washed waxed, and spiffd up
2. My CAI comes this week, and ill install it within the month.

3. possibly debadge my car.

Constantly melting headlight harness (Just changed to silvania Silverstar style bulbs to see if maybe previous bulbs were the problem.

Changed front brake rotors twice the second time with Durastop rotors and ceramic durastop pads seem to work well.

Guy came out of a driveway without looking for traffic and dented rt. fender (not fixed but have money for compensation :D )

CV axle half shaft on Pass. side replaced many times

some wheel studs replaced

Right side front bearing was finally grinding so I finally changed it and was able to reconnect the ABS wheel speed sensor so ABS and Trac off were also fixed

Fixed blower Motor resistor

Rear tailight bulb contacts were fixed and all lights now work

Emergency brake cable needs adjusting (haven't had time yet) Need to pull the lever all the way up just to get it to hold the car moderately

Changed burned out dash bulb on tach.

rear pass. door trim coming up

driver's side door trim undone, windows scratched

the painted door trim is faded

bumper scratches all around

various nicks and dents

weird messages sometimes on the radio and the volume never goes down when you want it down (though lightly puling out while turning the knob (toward vol. down) seems to work

New KYB struts and boot kits w/ monroe strut mount kits

keyless entry/VSS not working, will need to change

belt tensioner, alternator replaced

2 batteries (can't completely say it was the cars fault)

changed 2 wheel covers (99 GA SE base wheel covers)

Both fog light assys. broke!! cheap plastic bases and one lens melted too. (fixed one using soldering iron to remold base and replaced one assy. with an aftermarket part)

Rear Brakes replaced as of last week

Whew!! :D

I've had a busy week. I have replaced now both ball joints and tie rods up front. This weekend I also replaced the left hub bearing assembly. I've replace three of my original tires. And the one left of the original 4 can't go on the front because it bounces. On back it's fine. ANd today I adjusted my right tie rod and the alignment is straight again. Go down the road and let my hands off the wheel and it goes straight. I had to fix my right side abs sensor wire. WHen I put in the ball joint I left too much hanging out and it wore through on the rotor. I got the computer scanned. Seems my egr valve is shot (codes 75 76 and 77, all three solinoids). That's next month (at $179). I've replaced the lug nuts up front with solid end nuts. And a new cig lighter (for air pump. I keep a full size spare in back deflated to fit in the donut hole >:D)

I have left. I need to adjust the driver door. Top hinge is worn. The egr valve. The driver door speaker is flaking out (even though I soldered in one new wire the other flex wire is bad, did both on the passenger side). And I have a flaky check oil sensor. My pressure sensor is fine. I think it's the sensor on the bottom of the oil pan. It had oil in the connection. I cleaned it and it's been fine until today. But now it runs smooth and drives straight. Not bad for a $610 ebay special!

A/C - not working, probly compressor. Stopped working sometime last year, just before the weather went cold. As long as the rain holds off on hot days, the windows down works well enough.

Transmission - Yesterday, when shifting from reverse to drive (backing out of driveway), there was a purty loud "clunk" and the whole car shook. It's been a little jerky changing gears too.

Driver's seat - padding's shot. Couple springs poking out the back.

Trunk - leaking water

Suspension - purty worn out in general. Lots of potholes here, and I feel every.... single..... one....... Was going to use tax return to replace/upgrade, but had to spend it on replacing a couple other things instead.

Couple other things that have gone unnoticed because of the above.

edit - thought of a few more while reading the rest of the thread:

tons of paint chips on the hood and front bumper

2 very large scratches on driver's side of front bumper

standard window scratches

right front window rolls up and down slower than molasses on a cold day

badges and side cladding loose. Might go ahead and remove them if 1 or 2 fall off.
