View Full Version : fader?

I don't know if there's anything out there that will do exactly what I want, I found some things that are close but here goes.

I'm just taking the front line out's from my HU to my amp. I'm eventually going to run them through an EQ but I'm going to wait until I get everything hooked up. Right now I'm afraid the front speakers will be slightly louder than the rear so I want to be able to have some what of a fade control. So far the only thing that I've found that comes close to what I'm looking for is a 3 channel crossover. Maybe I'm way off key here and there's an eaiser way of doing it. I didn't really want to play with the gain of the amp much to do something like this, but I don't want to get blasted by the front speakers either.

Any ideas?

Umm... Maybe changing the fade/balance on your HU for front and back can change the signal it is getting. I have all mine run through amps and I change my settings on the HU. I have my rear set 3 notches higher than the Fronts aka at high volumes those fronts can kill your ears.

But thats just what I do...

The problem is, I only have front outputs coming from my HU. If I had front and rear it wouldn't be a problem.

i need a little more info here:

is your amp powering all four speakers? just 2 speakers? if its just powering the rear speakers, i would just turn down the gain/level on the amp.

Basically the setup goes like this:

Head Unit Front PreAmp Out -> Kicker EQ -> Front and Rear on 4 Channel Amp -> Front and rear Components

Maybe I just don't understand how the fader works on the HU? If all it does is decrease the signal than I guess I could turn the gain down. Everything I've read though says not to use it like a volume control.

does the 4 channel amp have separate gains for the the front and rear channels? I dont see why using the gain like that would hurt anything ya know. what else is it for lol.

Yeah it's got sperate front and rear gains. I was always under the impression they were more for signal matching than volume control.

well thats what youre essentailly doing right? maybe im not understanding what you mean by signal matching, which is def not out of the question lol. but i dont see why using it that way would hurt anything.

i wish someone else would post in here with a second opinion tho.

Ok.. here is what I think you have... you have ...

HU sending out a signal to an EQ.. then.. processing the signal, and sending it to your amp. The amp is then sending the signal to 4 speakers or sets of speakers (depending on type).

Correct?

Well.. you are only sending 1 signal! So.. if your fronts are higher than your rears... (shouldn't be) then, adjust the gains on your amp. Easy.

As for the "Everything I've read though says not to use it like a volume control"... that is what a fader is. (esentially). It simply kills the amount of signal going to one side or front and rear.

Easiest way is this... set gains on amp to an equal level. If you like the sound.. leave everything alone. If the front is too loud... start to slowly fade the signal to the rear speakers. When you find a volume you like (and can tolerate as you increase the volume) then leave everything alone and you are set. :)

Hope this helps

That helps. I was discussing with a friend at work and he suggested the same thing. I was kind of hoping I could find something that would give me more of a remote control, but that will work.

Thanks!
