i have a 97 grand am se 2.4l engine
the problem is it seems everytime i get the car to 60 and accelerate more the entire car jerks it seems like there is either misfire in the engine or something i'm not even sure
any help would be greatly apreciated

Could be fuel filter is cloged, usualy causes symtoms like that, hopefully thats it, a $20 fix.

No can't them,
I agree with Rad, also put a bottle a fuel treatment in the tank. Just hope it not the fuel pump. :(

just a quick update took it out with my car-knowledgable friend and his dad and the same thing kept happening except now it will jerk when you put it in reverse at a dead stop
I have a feeling that this is more than just a fuel problem if it is jerking at a dead stop with the car in reverse
my friend seems to think there could possibly be a transmission problem like the car is looking for a gear and can't find it (it is an automatic trany)
so i guess i will just have to take it to the shop and find out wtf is going on
maybe u need to get your shift points reset if you drive the car hard all the time it will shift rough my car did it.
also maybe try dropping your pan (changing the trans fluid could be something as small as that)
hope you fix your problems soon!
good luck!

well we changed the fuel filter and realized that the car had not had a tune-up ever so we are talking at least 8 years without changing spark plugs, fuel filters, distributor rotor and cap
so needless to say we changed the fuel filter only after we had to saw the old rusted one off
however the problem still remains....so i am taking it in for a tuneup to see if that might cure the problem as a lot of people are telling me the same thing
old sparkplugs/wires=misfire
OUCH!
bet she runs like a champ now eh??
might be a bad torque converter. You tranny may not be shifting out of overdrive.
A misfire would happen while you are at any speed. it's the RPM's that matter. If it only happens at a certain speed and not RPM...it's probably the tranny.

well also true but i took it to my guy and we went for a test drive and it is happening right around 3,000 rpm. I have had this guy work on all my cars many a time
and he says it is definetly engine related also another reason i think it is engine and not transmission related is 2 days before i changed the fuel filter i was backing out of a parking space at Worst Buy and i put the car back in drive stepped on the gas and she stalled and i am not the most mechanically enclined guy but i no that stalling is related to the engine not transmission
but we will soon see as we are expecting word sometime in the next two days about the exact problem

Replying to old posts but mine jerked doing the same thing...accelerating. Looked at my plugs and had the original ones from factory. Had 180,000 miles on them! Change the plugs and boots and hadn't had a problem since.
