Box smaller than recommended size?

My friend just picked up a sub that has a recommended box size of 1.5 cubic feet. What will happen to the lifespan of the sub if it's placed in a smaller box (approx 1 cubic foot) for a little while? I know it probably won't hit as hard but will it wreck the sub in the long run?

Ok sweet. She will be happy then. She just picked up a brand new 12" DVC Pioneer and a nice Alpine amp, and wants to get her tunes going. The smaller box will do until I have time to build a bigger one. Thanks guys.
