Well I tried removing my stock fuel filter, needs replaced. I bought a new one and I tried getting the old one off,got the one end off, that is threaded, but the other end has a black clip that I can't see to undo or snap off. Ive called 2 automotive places, both said no tool required.Do I really need a tool or do I just need to keep messing with the clip til I get it off?

if you look at the end it has tabs on each side to squeeze. A quick disconnect they call it. The threaded part is always the bugger for me. The end you're taking off is easy.

There are two different ends.

Depends on the car model/production date.
Some just clip-off without tools.
My '96 needed the special tool.

Go to the parts store, buy the $12 pack of 6 different plastic 'fuel line wrenches'.

One of them will fit; you slip it on the line, then push in to release the inner clips.

Save 'em all, 'cuz then you can rent one to a buddy for his @#$%in' car. :D

Good luck.

The black plastic clip broke apart when I tried to remove my filter. It is supposed to slip into the housing and push four metal fingers back to allow the filter to slip off the fuel line. The housing of my filter was filled with dirt and grit.

You can try to probe the housing with a wire and/or spray WD40 in there to flush out the dirt. If the clip is in there, I don't think you will get the special tool to work.

well like the post above my last he said there are fuel line wrenches that I guess push in that clip and what not and have to pull away to get it apart.I already broke one little tab on the clip though.I just need to have it changed, prolly why Ive been getting bad gas milage and my gauge flutters sometimes between fill ups, prolly glogged up and not get good flow

I just changed mine today and yeah the clip is a pain in the A**. The best tool to use for it is a pair of small but long tipped needle nose plier. once the threaded end is unscrewed, take the cliped end, unclip the bottow part then use the pliers to slide the inside of the clip upwards. Once its up about a centimeter you will be able to slide the filter out. If it still a little stick use the pliers to pry it out a bit. But don't force anything, a fuel line is a pain to fix.

I just did my own change for the first time this morning. A lot easier than I thought it would be. I needed a 13/16 back-up wrench for the filter's nut and a 16mm (didn't have imperial of equivalent size) wrench for the fuel line nut. The quick-disconnect on my year was very easy. I just played around with the clip that came with the replacement filter and figured it out.

i used a hacksaw to get the filter off then went in the line with a dull awl to pop the clip out then just cleaned up the o ring and poped the new filter on.....but remeber my filter was pretty much rusted to crap

took about 2 hours to do lol
