cruise control not working

in our 99 Grand Am GT the cruise wont work, u press the button, and u hold it, and the light comes on, but not the acutualy cruise, it never engages, but the second u let off the button it goes off, whats up? its worked fine be4, is it vaccum operated

Sorry, I can't really be of help on how the 99+ interacts with the PCM, but I can tell that it's not vacuum operated. 94 was the last year of vacuum cruise modules, 95+ has electronic servo motor modules.

It could be the switch on the brake pedal or shifter.

Sometimes mine won't work and I tap the brakes a couple of times and it will engage.
