Just wondering how hard it is to get to the flasher? It makes noise when your driving, drives you nuts sometimes. Thanks.

Sorry forgot to tell model of car. 1999 Grand Am SE. The sound is coming from the dash so I know it behind there somewhere...

Two flashers, neither of which should make any noise except when the 'flashing' is activated:

1. Turn signal flasher: In the side-of-the-dashboard fuse compartment, easy to access.

2. 4-way emergency flasher: In the column, I understand, and not easy to access.
I beleive there's a formal 'Safety Recall' for this unit for your car (see 'Recall' sticky thread in 'Problems and Solutions' forum).

What kind of noise while you're driving??

Good luck.

Not on 99+, there's only one flasher unit which is inside the hazard switch assembly in the centre console.

I have a 2001 Grand AM SE2 that just started doing the same thing as the '99. Any ideas of what part needs to be replaced and how to access the assembly? RECAP Blinker clicking noise in the dash when the blinker isn't activated (also works when blinker is activated) and is random clicking not rhythmatic like when you activate the blinker.

oh and btw had the "recall" done on the vehicle which involved that same assembly approx 3 months ago...was wondering if the dealer could have hosed it up. Involved re-soldering connections.

I would take it back to pontiac dealer. They should fix it for free.

they won't! they told me they would diagnose it but if it was not the recalled part they would charge $80 for the diagnostic. if you don't want to give the GM stealership that money go to autozone and buy their multifunction switch, sw1414 i think, for $65 and put it in yourself. some torq wrenches and 20 minutes and your done. be sure to push in the horn contact while installing the switch assembly.

I found out it is not the flasher after replacing it. It looks like it is in the trun signal switch itself. This weekend I will check to see if it just need to be cleaned. One way to stop it, but it a two part proccess to use the turn signal is to pull the hazard fuse, then turn on the hazards while you are driving, with the fuse out they will not turn onand no noise. Then when you need to turn just turn off the hazard and turn on the signal. Sounds dumb but will work till you get it fixed.

that's pretty smart. wished I had figured that out before I changed it. don't forget about the horn contact.

I contacted the dealer and they told me it is most likely the multifunction switch and would cost $150 with $130 worth of labor....thinking I'm gonna go searching junkyards for the part. Thanks for the quick fix advice as well.
