Hi,
Had the Intake Manifold Gasket replaced at 80000km....the next day I noticed a noise coming from the engine and the service manager tells me this is normal and it is only the lifters doing the noise which is normal....I'm at 120000km now and still does the same..is this normal for the 3.4 engine?
Before the gasket replacement my oils changes at 5000km I would never add oil before reaching the 5000km, but now at 4000km I have to add a litre of oil...is this normal for the mileage on it or?

One last thing.......at idle the RPM runs at 700rpm and intermittently drops to 600rpm and back to 700rpm so not a steady 700rpm...

Any info would be appreciated.
thanks

When i had the lower intake manifold gasket replaced in my 3100, i did not notice any noise coming from the engine. I have never heard of anyone having this but i could be wrong.

The service manager is full of shit. I've done many intakes on the 3.1's and 3.4's and if it makes noise after it's because the lower end bearings are shot. Coolant that leaks into an engine (especially if ignored) will destroy the rod and main bearings. Any noise heard from the engine is usually right after the repair (lifters pumping up) but goes away within minutes.
Plan on a new motor.

If the nosie is their at cold start-up and goes away after a min or so like HeyDace said then it's normal.

If the gasket was replaced under warranty what are the odds of getting the engine rods and bearings replaced also..????
The job was done at 80000km and now am at 120000km.
thanks

I don't know Canadian law.
And I'm not a lawyer in the US.
And, in the US, laws differ from state-to-state.

That being said, the fact that suspicious noises showed up AFTER a warranty correction indicates the correction wasn't performed properly.
You complained to the appropriate person at the time. He shined you on. Hopefullly, you have some paperwork about this complaint.
You should take the vehicle back and tell that service manager that you've waited 40,ooo kms and the noise still hasn't disappeared, it's not normal, and he should find out what's wrong and correct it.

Then, prepare for battle.

You have a good case, but the timing is definitely not on your side (waiting this long).
Don't wait any longer. Either go to battle now, or forever hold your piece.

Good luck.

PS:
If a noise isn't present in everyone of the brand-new cars and engines on a dealer's lot, it's not 'normal' in similar engine with 80,000 kms or 800,000 kms, either.

Yes, hydraulic valves lifters (and other things) make a *little* noise, but nothing to be objectionable.
