I know our rear decks tend to rattle with bass, but how can you really tell if your speakers are blown?

Easy, throw a different speaker in there. Just hold up a speaker you know works and connect the wire, if it is still distorted, it's your deck(happened to mine). If it doesn't rattle then your speaker is blown.

This could be hard if I don't have any extra speakers laying around.....

Pull it out, look at it. There's a common problem w/ Monsoons. ...You do have a Monsoon right? The tweeter post breaks of the mount & causes some pretty nasty rattling. Those woofers are near impossible to blow. Havn't heard of one blowing yet. Alot of people are fooled into thinking it's blown when this happens. All you have to do is clip the wires, throw the tweet out & hook up a new tweet beside the woofer, under the tear drop shaped part of the grill. Although the Monsoon system is tricky w/ the diff. ohm rated speakers, the tweeters can be replaced w/ aftermarket tweeters w/ no ill effects. Infact it will sound better w/ a good quality aftermarket tweeter set.:)
ON a side note, just any speaker will not work correctly w/ a Monsoon. The woofers are 2 ohm. in the GA Monsoon system

Ya I noticed. I am thinking about scraping the entire Monsoon system and go with aftermarket HU and speakers. I have been trying to find stock MP3 HU that came out in 04, but no luck yet. I am pretty sure they are $$$ brand new.

You can sometimes just hold a AA battery to the wire, and if it doesnt crackle, then its blown. You hold the posotive side of the battery to one wire, and the negative to another.
Or, you could just switch it to the corner and hear for yourself, just switch it to that particular corner which you have probably already done.

one way is to take an ohmmeter and hook it up to the speaker. (MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS WITH THE SPEAKER OFFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!)
Im not sure what the impedance of your speakers are, but they should say on the back of the speakers themselves.....but in ANY case, they shouldnt measure more than 8 ohms. But if the impedance is any higher than what it says on the back of the speaker, then the coil is blown. Another way to check if you dont have a meter is to push down on the cone of the speaker. If it makes a crunching noise, thats a sign telling you that the speaker is blown. Good luck!
