today i blew a 148db on the audio control meter on dash, and 144db on the termpro on dash, used 40hz tone

another note, smoked a guy with 2 w7 12's and a jl 1000w amp, pretty equal contest too, he had ford ranger extended cab with a very similar box to mine, only difference is he paid way too much for his system and got beat after talking crap

LOL don't ya love it. We did that with a customer of ours. Him and his buddy came down to the shop, his buddy just had a $7000 install done at one of our competitors shops. 3 DEI 12's and the big DEI 2000 watt amp in a custom fiberglass enclosure. All in a 98 body style eclipse (hatchback) We took 2 Ample Audio 12's (threw them in a prefab for $300) and hooked them up to a JBL 600.1 and just set it in the trunk of our customers 97 GA. We metered them both and the GA won by 1.6db on the dash. Just goes to show ya, it's not always how much you pay or what you have.

wow, didn't know you were running crossfire now. that's what i've got on emily's 18" and it's been a great amp. had one mishap with it, but it was totally my fault.

that's funny that you smoked some guy. i done the same thing at a competition with emily's car. some dude was talking some major crap that the only kicker sub worth owning was the solo baric L7, and any amp other than kicker was crap. so that was a double wammy toward me. needless to say the non L7 18" and non kicker amp pushing out 1200 watts ripped him a new anus. i beat him by 3 dB :D , he had a 146 and i had a 149. he was in a civic, not sure on year model, just know it was silver. he had a nice looking install, and it sounded good, but it didn't meter worth a damn. it was 2 L7 10s in a ported box with a kicker amp on it.

well that guy you were up against was a moron. he woulda done better with 2 12w6v2 subs on that single 1000/1 or just one of those 12w7s. either way...you rocked him. i dont believe in metering on the dash, that used to be considered cheating when i was into competing...we used to put a tripod on the seat and the mic was at the natural ears location. on the dash the sound reverberates off the dash and the windshield.

at any cost...nice numbers. i only hit 143 or so with my old system.

yeah, the guy just saw the W7's in all the "whips" on tv, then dropped a ton of money for them and screwed up, they're 1000rms right? if so he was severly underpowering them

yup, i've seen tones of vehicles with w7's and crappy amps, and they seal them and want spl

a guy on another board is conviced that a reg cap tacoma with 3 type s's sealed and a audio bahn 800t will out hit me

All the comps I've been to,both for SPL and SQ, I've always been metered with the mic at the windshield. And now that I think of it I have to agree that placing the mic at "ear level" would be a little more accurate of how loud the system actually is....at least to a human.

On a similar note I watched Rides the other day and they showed Alpines new demo vehicle (BMW X5) and once it was done, they tuned it with a "crash test dummy" that had prosthetic human ears with mics built into them hooked up to an RTA.

yeah, but they had to set up the sound timing for over 20 speakers though

it was a bad ass car though

Yea, that guy was way underpowering his W7's. A 12W7 takes 850W rms as a recommended rating. The 13W7 which is actually a 13.5" sub takes 1000w Rms recommended as well. That said, Everyone knows JL subs can take a hell of a lot more juice than what is recommended. As for mic position, Im very similiar to Dave here. In both my comps they have a mic setup on the passenger seat. Now its kinda cheating but one good way to make up a DB or two is to move the seat forward, closer to the windsheild. Ill stick to seat Db's becasue thats what I can compare my car to. Ive heard that as much as 10 - 15 Db's can be made or lost depending on the mic location.

they can take lots of power, but they're in all reality a SQ sub, i've never seen anybody use them and win at comp, normally ppl use DD, rockford, orion, and mtx, however RE is a new brand that is sweeping both SPL and SQ comps, took the world by suprise last year, but only one way to get them and thats factory direct www.reaudio.com

not bashing JL, but i just don't think they're goal is SPL like rockford and other brands, however rockford did make a good attempt at SQ this year, the power T series have excellent SQ, but still not as good as JL, but much improved over the Hx2's

this is totally off topic, but if you watch overhauled, the new car audio guys (geoff Curtin and Joe Weiss) are my buddies. Geoff helped me with my fiberglass work in my car, and he does the Boston Acoustics cars as well.

OK back on topic. :D

Id ahve to agree with tommy in saying that JL isnt all about SPL. They are not. What they are is a very good quality sub/amp company that gives lots of power and great SQ and good SPL. They are not going to blow you away with SPL or SQ but they give a great example of between. Ill take JL over many companies though.

JL may make a good product, but the local a$$clowns that sell it have made me turn my back on them. they're rude, sarcastic, and snobby, and many other words i can't think of due to lack of sleep :P. but im not biased, im the same way with several products locally. guess im just childish about it.

well matts, id avoid the shops, not the brands. i do understand how it tho...been there done that.

and yes, JL is not an SPL nor an SQ brand. they try to stay between, leaning more toward SQ. even the w7 series they claim is NOT an SPL subwoofer, but rather an SQ one, i personally feel that its too sloppy to be considered an SQ sub, thats why i have the W6.

Ahh yes, the W6v2's. I love those dave, but if I were to renew my system, it woudl be with 12's. I kinda like the extra bass. Oh, about the W7, why do you htink they made the 13.5W7? Right in between 12 and 15" to get the best of both worlds, or so the thinking.

i think that's one of those ideas that sounds really good on paper, but just doesn't quite perform as hoped in the field. my .02

the cone size of the 13.5 is the same as a 15, this is because of the overlapping surround, if you took an average 15 and sat it next to a 13.5 the only differnce in size would be the mounting area
