well it finally happened. my L5 12" is a goner. i was tinkering around with my system in my truck tonight. i thought i had noticed the sub sounding kind of weak lately and on certain songs i thought i had heard some popping.............well i did. i had my head by the sub box and i could hear it popping at low volumes.

this thing has taken a BEATING. it's rated for 600 watts rms.......i've got a tad more going to it. somewhere to the tune of 750ish. i have 2 volumes on my stereo.....loud or soft. there's not much middle ground. i've been wondering just how long it was going to last with the abuse i put it through. and im impressed with the results. it's been about 2 years of constant hammering and about a year of semi-easy listening.

while i was messing around i think my alpine 4x6s are on their way out too. again, i've put these things through hell. they're rated for i think 45 watts rms........i'm giving them about 75 :D. they've also surprised me. they were kinda pricey for their size, $150 a pair. they sound good......especially with that big amp on them.

SOOOO, it's time for some new speakers all the way around. i've been thinking about doing it anyway, but now i've got the motivation and excuse to do it. i'm gonna go back with another L5 12" for the time being just for the main reason i dont want to have to build another box. it's been a good sub and gives me enough bump. for the mids/highs im going to shoehorn some components in the dash with a fiberglass housing and just mount them in the back factory location. not sure what kind im going with yet, depends on what kind of deals i run across.

i plan on putting bucket seats in my truck and when i do that it'll probably be 2 15s or one bad a$$ 12. haven't really decided yet, but probably be 1 solo x 12" in a nice size ported box between the seats

You probably know this, but power is not what takes out a speaker, it's the clipping (on a physical level, the mico seconds that the voice coil is pinned eventually melts the glue holding it together, due to the high current coming out of the amp, your speakers wern't designed to handle DC at all!)....

por ejemplo, I had 180 watts per channel running to a pair of 80-watt-rated infinity component speakers (Kappa 50.5 CS), they lasted 3 years! Infact, they're probably still working becuase I sold my old car with them working in it! I gaurantee you if you lower the gains, the speakers would hold up much longer, and sound more accurate.

check out adire audio for some amazing subs.

matts, consider a new L7, factory renewed!!! I'm gonna probably get one now instead of an IDMAX,

an L7 12" wont fit behind my seat...it a regular cab.

yeah phillip. i know its more distortion than power, but when you have too much power going to it, and then you have remote gain control at your finger tips........well those 2 form a dangerous duo :P

you sure? The L5 is:

Mounting Depth: 6 3/4" (17.1cm)

L7:

Mounting Depth: 6 13/16"

i see that now, but kicker has changed the mounting depth then. because when i bought my L5 it was the same sub as the 10" L7 (aside from cone area, duh). but power ratings were the same, mounting depth was the same

i can't find my spec sheet laying around that showed my mounthing depth for my particlar L5, but it wasn't that close to the L7. i would have made my box 1/16" deeper to compensate if that would have been the case.

:) I figured, but ya, if you can fit that sub, I'd get one. the price is right..

i may just take it completely out and start to work on my new system. i'm going to put bucket seats in there and my center console is going to be a box. either with 2 L7 15s or 1 solo x 12".....not really sure yet. either way it gonna be loud :D

Sorry to hear that Matt. Why dont you take a walk to the dark side and try a nice JL sub ;)? Hehe well hopefully everything works out for you, and I know what you mean between quiet and loud. Ive been running my system for a year and a half at loud and I know its pushing the limits ( though not of my subs, Im thinking my amp will be the one to go ). Best of luck!

I say go with the 2 12 inch L7s when you take your back seat out.. more cone area!

I dropped my S10L7 and got a new S12L7.. Dropped that and got an MTX 12 inch 8500. I like it alot better. Sounds better and seems like it can take a better beating than my Kickers and the Kicker Solos that I had, take more wattage then the 8500.

dont have a back seat......it's a regular cab. if i had an extended cab i would have yanked out the back seats LONG ago and shoved 4 15s in there :D.

i haven't didnt have good luck with MTX during the brief stint i owned them. they were the 8000 series from a few years back, not a bad speaker, but didn't hold up well to my abuse
