View Full Version : Chevy’s SS lineup is growing to a record eight vehicles
Here we go again, using another proud historical performance designation to get rid of boring under achieving vehicles.

Maybe next year we can have an Aveo SS ?

Lame. I think I may never buy a new car again. I'll just buy a classic so I dont have to care about the b.s. of all the carmakers. more specifically at this time, G.M.

Well didn't the Impala and Cheevelle share the same body back in the day? And then later on the Malibu was a Chevelle package? lol

I’m far from the definitive expert on this, since back in the day I was in to Pontiac’s. But I sure that the Impala and the Chevelle never shared the same chassis, the impala was full size and the Chevelle was an intermediate body. As for the option packages The Malibu was a Trim option on the Chevelle like the RS was on the Camaro it could be ordered on ether a 6 or 8 cylinder car. The SS package also a trim package was only available with on the V-8 car but you could combine them on the V-8 car. As an example the Malibu SS and the first generation Camaro SS with the hideaway headlights. the lights were part of the RS package. I think I got that straight.

So, you guys will get on here and talk up your 3600 Grand Prix's but turn your noses at a chevy sedan with 240 horses? These cars are atleast a step in the right direction. They will beat all of our Grand Ams down the track, and a V8 option will appear for the Impala and Monte.
On another note, the Cobalt SS is a superior car in its segment, cant we be a little kinder to GM. If you guys are going to complain about their cars and threaten not to buy them, then dont get all up in a tissy when you hear their sales are down and a devision might be closing.

The difference, I only drive coupes! Its all part of being young, I guess. But a sport sedan doesn't make me feel all warm and tingly inside...

I'm sorry but I actually like the Malibu SS. I think the Malibu Maxx is a cool car if it had some things changed on it. Now I can't wait to see the MaxxSS. Once it hits the dealership I might have to go test drive one.

Rayz I think you are corect. IIRC the Impala was a A-Body car and the Chevelle a B-Body correct? Already knew about the Malibu package and you are correct, the hide away lights on the FBody are part of the RS package along with othe roptions avalable like hockey stick stripes, tail light treatments, and other things depending on year.

Better photos of the Malibu SS and Malibu Maxx SS
BTW, the wife and I went and looked at a Malibu Maxx, Cobalt and Impala SS today. I'm interested in seeing both a Maxx SS and Cobalt SS. The Cobalt with the sport package seemed like a decent deal for only $17,900.

You could argue that Pontiac "bastardized" the accronym GTO, being that Ferrari first used it to designate their ultra high performance exotic.
How about the accronym GT? Is that really designated for family sedans?
SS, GT and GTO do have one specific purpose: to be used on marketing a vehicle to appeal to whatever gendre is targeted, plain and simple.

Actually, I think you got those switched, I think the Impala was a B-body and I know the Chevelle was an A-body. My friend has a '67 Chevelle Malibu with the 396 bored to 402, it's currently in restoration and I can't wait to see it once he's done
Actually, here's a before pic:

And I agree with you on the new Malibu, John, it is a pretty good looking car, but don't tell my friend (see above) I said that

Ok, I think it's cool that they have V8 options on these redesigned cars (classics?), and I'm sure there will be a semi-strong market for them from the hardcore fans of the old cars, no doubt, but I fear with rising gas prices, people will make a crunch and choose a car better on gas.
Face it, Chevy and Pontiac don't have any cars that are magnificently good on gas. I can think of the Vibe and Aveo, but I'd vomit all over anyone who buoght an Aveo.
Where is the classic Chevy and Pontiac styling from the last 15 years? What's with this new, overdone European body? I want a car that stands out, not a car that looks like all the other imports in town.
I drive a 99 Firebird, and I would take that over any of the new Muscle cars GM has pushed out (minus a Corvette ;)). I also proudly have a four door 00 GT sedan, which, DontPasstheFenc, is a damn sexy car :D

Older Impala, way before the Caprice.

I dont see whats wrong with it, do you want an ls6 in it or something? i mean the old typhoons and cylcones where cool cars. theres an article in chevy performance mag that has a build up on the SS Silverado that with some differnt mods got it into the 12s. I mean really want do you want these cars to do, run 10s off the show room floor and pull 1g on the skidpad, you cant expect much from a truck performance wise.
