Didn;t knwo where to post this so i just decided to post this here....

I was reading the 1999GA manual and it said in 3rd gear you get better gas mileage than on just D.

Now the question is this:

Should i drive on 3 or on D, the manual said i can either do any of them....

Please advice, the better gas milage i have the more money i keep, Gas is SOOO expensive here in NYC.....

Help out a Brotha.....

:???: HUH , you're always going to get better mileage in normal driving in D ( overdrive ) with the convertor lockup ingaging ...

my book said 3rd is better then 2nd which is better then 1st, but d was the best for saving gas/every day driving. only use the other gears when needed (hills and such)

Yea, think of it like this. The lower the gear ( ie, 3rd over Drive ), the more the revs. If you rev your engine lots and drive fast all over the place, you lose fuel economy. Simply put, the lower the gear, the worse the fuel economy becasue yoru motor has to rev higher and the only way to do that is add more air and fuel.

Here a Quote from my Book as it is written....

THIRD (3): This position is also used for normal driving, however, it offers power and lower fuel economy than AUTOMATIC Overdrive (D).

Now "Lower Fuel Economy" to me means using less gas, or am i reading too much into it?

Thanx

lower fuel economy...as in the fuel economy is lower. As in lower gas mileage

You want higher fuel economy , it means just what it says you will get lower ( less ) economy in 3rd .....

"Lower Fuel Economy" means less miles to the gallon, so I agree with the others "D" has a high fuel economy. For example if you were getting 22 miles to the gallon in "3", and then drove in "D" and you got 25 miles to a gallon, then that is better gas mileage or "Higher Fuel Economy"

I hope I explained that so you understand.

that is true....

you know how Toyota/Hyundai/dunno who else have the little button under the shifter button to turn O/D on or off?

well, (on a GM atleast) that is just like putting the shifter from D to 3.... it keeps it out od over drive (since 3rd is really "drive" meaning a 1:1 ratio)

But also, in hilly areas, or stop and go town driving... keep the shifter in 3, as it is a little better to drive (more power with a slight bump on the gas pedal) but alot better on the trans, as it isn't always shifting in and out of O/D.... I don't know about the Grand Am though... on my '93 DeVille I just leave it in D and it shifts perfect, even thru town... my Oldsmobile though like to go into O/D often and would sometimes lag, so I would keep it in 3 and never have that problem......
