Is it possible to fit a 16in tire on a 17 in rim?

Yes, you can. But the stretch will make your tire much narrower, as it gives up the tread width in order to open bigger for the rim. So you usually have to go to a much narrower rim when you do this conversion.

You're kidding, right?

That didn't quite make sense. Explain it to me in numbers, maybe i'll understand. I just got Goodyear Assurance tripletred tires for my car and they are 225/50R16 and i want new rims but don't have money for a whole new set of tires. So if i put them on 17in rims what happens?
It seems like i'd loose sidewall width and not tread width.

Awwwwwwwwww...Colin!

Anyway, Manny, the real solution is to buy 16 inch rims. 7 inches wide would be a good fit for the 225/50s................

You simply cannot mount 16 inch tires on 17 inch rims..........
