just got an 04 SE1 grand am. i know it doesnt have the monsoon system thats obvious. but looking at the rear 6x9's they say 8ohm, im just wondering if the head unit is powering these or some other amp stuffed somewhere. speakers i want to put in are 4 ohm and i was thinking of changing the head unit but if i have to worry about an amp and stuff im not gonna bother.

starting in 01 you have to buy a special $100 adapter to put in a aftermarket headunit. GM, being the wonderful engineers they are (heavy sarcasm), has wired almost all of your buzzers, whistles, and bells into the factory headunit. the $100 harness keeps all of those buzzer, whistles, and bells working and to keep your car from going into a frinzy.
and im not sure on the 04, but i know on my finace's 99, w/o the monsoon, there is a little amp, 25 watts i believe, in the trunk on the drivers side fenderwell behind the carpet.
when i put her new speakers in i just ran new wire from the new headunit to the speakers. not that hard, and only took about 30 minutes to do so. that eliminated me having to mess with the amp, plus i dont like the dinky wire from the factory. i went from about 18-20 gauge to 14 :P

figures gm would do that, probly more money for them somehow. i looked where you said and there is not any amp or anything there for that matter so i guess the headunit powers them all, least its a little easier and all i need is that module.
thanks

If it does not say monsoon their is no amp. Matt you are close but it does not cost $100. The crime box cost about $70. The kit i got here
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5752177785&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1
was only about $25. I use a old computer speaker with it and boom chimes. That wiring kit does nto come with a speaker.

well my sister-in-law just bought one from an audio place here and it was $99. i offered to go real smooth and just bypass the whole damn factory stereo, but she wanted it done "right". so she went that route
