I want to switch over my front O2 sensor myself. I understand it's a single wire connection with some minor installs. I have a few questions before I attempt it. Where can I find a detailed set of instruction for switching it? Also are there specific brand(s) to look for? It's being done on a 99 grand am SE. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There is a special socket with a slot in it, that you may need. The slot gives the wire some place to go. Mostly you just put the socket on and unscrew it. put the new one in place and tighten it.
WORD of advice, soak the O2 with a penatrating oil and let it sit for a few hours before trying to remove. Over night would be great soak time.

Though 4KQuads advice is excellent, I will have to beg to differ. I would change it out when the manifold is warm. Reason being that you could pull out some threads on the manifold if it is cold. I can attest to this, as I have had customers over the years take out the O2 cold, and come back looking for an O2 sensor with oversized threads. I have told this advice to all customers when they are buying one, and so far have not had any comebacks. :)

I just had to mention that my O2 sensor went out, but it was the one that is post-catalytic... I guess the local dealer said it was more difficult to change than the one up near the engine.
Jay do you recommend it be warm and dry. or does soaking it in oil first still apply?

Hey, that rhymed! :D
Take it out dry and warm. Course, you can also spray pentrant on it and let it soak for a minute or so. Just dont do it cold, it may be....regretable. :(

Good point Jayhawk, in most cases it would be easyer to remove warm still. But I would wait, for the metal to cool before tightening up the new one. I would hate to thighten it in while the metal is warm and expanded.
