Hello Everybody.

I'm new to the board and new to the DOHC engines. I just picked up a steal of a deal 97 GA GT with the 2.4 DOHC matched to a 5-spd tranny.

The engine is shot and I am planning on replacing it. I've done some research on this board and found that the EGR valve is diiferent on 99 and newer 2.4 engines....is there anything that CANNOT be bypassed by using parts from the now deceased 1997 2.4 engine.

I've found several low mileage 2000 engines and I want to know what all is involved in making the newer engine compatible.

I'm not looking to put together an HO or Hybrid engine....just low-buck options to put this GT back on the road.

I've got no problem swapping out the manifolds, injectors and misc stuff. Just looking for a way to put it back on the road for as little cash as possible.

I was also considering stepping back to a 2.3 if possible (maybe way cheaper)....if the blocks and mounting brackets are the same is it possible to swap out intake and exhaust manifolds, accessories, injectors etc and make this engine run in the 1997 GA GT???

I've got no problem turning wrenches, just looking for a bit of insight. Any help from those who have been there and done that would be appreciated. Thanks

i put in an 2k engine in my 98

EGR is no problem, just use your intake mani and exhaust mani and your valve will still bolt up to the newer head (its the exact same ports, they just blocked it with the exhaust gasket)
The only issue you will run into is the knock sensor....its set up different on the block, so you just need to tap it or weld something together...just plan for that and you will be fine

i'm not positive but i think if you ran an old 2.3 then you would need to worry about the ECU then, since some stuff has changed...maybe a 95 would work since it was a mix, newer bottom older top...but i think it would make more sense to get a newer low mile engine so you will be able to run it awhile and not be as likely to have problems :)

Using the newer engine is the route I was hoping to take. Manifolds are an easy enough swap.

What is the difference with the knock sensors? Is it just a matter of different threads for the screw in sensor at the same location?

How did you deal with it on your engine....did you just tap the threads?

yea...the 2k+ has a smaller hole so you can just tap it to use your old knock sensor

and i also forgot you have to use your old fuel rail and injectors...but you dont want those low impendence injectors anyway...lol

Well, I've lined up an engine for the car. Bought an engine and auto tranny together.

The engine is from a wrecked 1996 GAGT with 62,000 miles on it. I don't need the tranny (mines a 5 speed) so this automatic transmission might be posted for sale on this board in the near future.

I've done so research and have found that I will have to swap out the intake manifold and TB. I also found one site that said I will need to swap out the harmonic balancer????

It's obvious that the flywheel has to be switched, but does it make sense to change the harmonic balancer? Anyone ever hear of this?

Thanks.

well if its from a 96 you can just drop it in and not worry about a thing 96 and 97 are the exact same
