Hows everyone doing. This is my first post. Am having a problem.
I just picked up a 96 Quad not to long back. Well the belt that drives the alt. and ac broke. No big deal went to the part store. picked up a belt. First he guy gives me a 475K6 I get home and notice its the wrong belt. I need a 475K5 or atleast thats what it calls for. Get home again, go to put it on a good inch to short. What the F#@K. I go back they dont have a 485 all the y got is a 480 and a 490 one is still to short the other is to big. Finally got the 485 i needed.
When i called the guy i got the car from he said that the motor was a 95. The part store says that the 95 still need the 475K5 belt. I need to know what motor ive got so if anything else does go bad i can get the right part the first time not the forth. Thanks for any help i can get.

If you go to a real parts store with some old heads they will have a tool to measure belt lenghth and wala the right belt the first time.

I have discovered that the belt size for the 2.4 = 95 2.3 belt.
Make sure you are routing the belt right. It's easy to mix up the routing near the tensioner / alternator.

^ :agree:
The gatorback belt on my car can fit a 2.3. It's 5pk1220 or 4050480

Relative to finding your engine model:
1. Get a Haynes or Chilton's manual. You're gonna need it soon for something else, anyhow :roll2: .
2. The manual has some cartoons of where to look on your engine to get the serial number. Find it and write it down.
3. Google around and see who at GM you can call or e-mail to get data.
But first, there's a REAL pint of confusion as to years.
For GA's, the engine computer systems were:
* '93 and earlier: OBD-I
* '94 and '95: Interim version, nicknamed 'OBD-I.5'
* '96 and newer: OBD-II.
It's possible that the previous owner bought a '95 engine and had it put into his '96 when his engine went south.
If so, he would have had to update the sensors and possibly the ignition and fuel injection for it to be compatible with the '96's much-improved engine computer (PCM, Powertrain Control Module).
IMO it's more likely that either the car and engine are '95 or the car and engine are '96. What does the vehicle registration say?
If they are, indeed, a '95 motor in a '96, be wary when purchasing sensors and the like:
They will be for the '96, while the belt and engine innards will be '95.
Good luck.

^It's simply a mislabeled belt, misrouted belt, incorrect size pulley on the alternator (common issue on rebuilt replacements) or tensioner doesn't release far enough to fit proper belt on.
There's absolutely no way someone put a 95 Quad to replace a 96 2.4. For the amount of work to make it run, might as well swap to an engine from a foreign car. See my post here:

Also, the 95 is a wildcard on the ECU. Some were OBD1.5 and some were OBDII and additionally had a cam position sensor.
Trust me, it's the same belt. I'm running the belt included in the 2.4 supercharger kit... with a 2.3 engine/crank pulley, 2.3 A/C compressor, 2.3 alternator, 2.3 tensioner, 2.4 supercharger, 2.4 S/C idler. It fits.
Also, the Haynes manuals suck at 2.3's and 2.4's. Get a real GM service manual. http://www.helminc.com
