I've read here about a rattling/grinding noise when the AC is off.

However on my car, the AC rattles sometimes when the AC is ON. It only seems to rattle when the car is on idle, and as soon as the AC is turned off, the noise goes away. Any ideas anybody? I cant seem to find exactly where the noise is coming from.

We're not ignoring you, we just don't have any similar experiences from which to comment.

Get or make a mechanic's stethoscope, and CAREFULLY place the end to the various parts of the engine while this noise is occurring.
This will let you know if the noise comes from the AC compressor, the AC condenser (in front of the radiator), Alt, PS pump, WP, or tensioner.
Report back to us.

When the AC is 'on', the AC compressor clutch engages and puts about 5 hp of force into the serp belt.
This could cause a noise not otherwise associated with the AC.

BE CAREFUL OF MOVING BELT AND SPINNING PULLEYS!!

Standing by,
-Rick

I'm not sure, but the other day, I drove to school and back with only my air on, no radio or radar detector and it didn't do it. Then i drove back with my air and my radio on and it still didn't do it. But i've noticed before that when its made the noise, I've had my radio, and and radar detector on for a while. Could it be the alternator is having a problem or a problem with the battery?

"...a rattling/grinding noise" is the only clue you've given us as to your problem.

That is REALLY hard to e-analyze.

I can give you list of 2,000 things it is NOT:
1. It is NOT the battery, since thay just sit there and never make noise.
2. - 2,000. Other stuff. :roll2:

High on the list of things that CAN rattle/grind:
1. Alternators.

PLEASE get a mechanic's stethoscope and tell us WHERE the noise seems to originate.

Thanks,
-Rick

"E-anaylize"?

Good one Rick. My "E-guess" would be either the clutch pulley bearings or clutch plate.
