I have a very big problem. I am selling my 1994 Pontiac Grand Am. I have a ran an autocheck and carfax report on it. However, the carfax report shows a mileage of 103,318 listed by a "Service Station" with the only explanation of "Vehicle Serviced" in 2001. When I purchased the vehicle there were 69,000 miles on the odometer, now there are about 72,000 listed on the odometer. Well, my AutoCheck report lists one mileage listing of 30,000 in 1996. So, should I believe a mistake was made on the autocheck report or what? My seats in my car are like new, they are not worn out. Also, my engine runs perfect and the transmission shifts fine. I have noticed the hood has been replaced and the car has been touched up in places here and there but the only place where I notice "excessive" wear is maybe on the turn signal switch where the letters are worn off. Even the pedals do not look worn out. The vehicle seems very much like it does have 72,000 miles on it and not in excess of 103,000 miles since that was the reading in 2001 by that "service station" but AutoCheck does not even make mention of this. My power locks and air conditioning even work, so I don't know what to believe! Please help me try to understand this.

perhaps someone managed to pop in a new engine? or odometer?
104,000 miles sounds about right if you're averaging 12,000 miles a year, which is pretty decent mileage.

Did you own the car in 2001?

I'd probably trust carfax then. Looks like you got screwed when you bought the car. Check on the door sill, there might be an odometer adjustment sticker there.
105k miles in 2001 would be right in line with the use the car saw in the first few years (15k miles a year).

Sounds like someone did a "junkyard refresh" and sold it. Pedals and wear items are the first things they'll replace. 92-95 gauge clusters with low miles can be found in handfuls. My 94 had a perfect interior at 103K.
Carfax and similar can only be as accurate as their source... so take it all with a grain of salt. I know my 94 was in a collision... that's nowhere to be found in carfax. On the other hand, all mileage listings are accurate, as they are on another car I totalled.
Either way, prolly too late to do anything at this point... if it drives fine and has a solid chassis don't worry about it.
