...and don't know where to put it.

Freind has a 1999 grand am GT and the muffler needs replaced. All of the local muffler shops can't get the muffler. I looked at gmpartsdirect.com and its nearly 400 shipped.

What is special about this muffler and what do all you people do when it is time to replace it?

[I did look in the FAQ but didn't see anything]

Go aftermarket. You can get an entire aftermarket exhaust system for around $500 shipped. Stock parts are expensive.

Any idea what aftermarket suppliers are good to use?

Borla and SLP are the polular choices for cat-back systems. Otherwise pretty much any cross-flow camaro-style muffler will fit with a little custom bending. :)

^ I agree, don't go stock unless you could find one for cheap. If you just want a muffler and not a whole cat-back, you could look into Flowmasters. They would be around $100 for just the muffler, and sound good too.

Oh, and you can check www.pfyc.com for the Borla and SLP, although you may want to shop around to see if you can find it for less.

Welcome!

You could try eBay or the "For Sale" section of the forums. Some people sell their stock muffler when they upgrade.

Here's one (maybe)
