ok here we go...
parts needed:
- wire stripper
- screwdriver
- dremel(used to cut a hole for a switch)
- soldering iron
- shrink wrap tubing
- 18 to 12ga wire(your choice)
- 6 in of velcro
- neons for installation(obviously)
i am not taking responsibilty for a mistake in this install. you do this at your own risk. as with any mod, you are modify YOUR car. it is YOUR choice to do so.
now that that is out of the way, why dont we get this started.
read carefully and completely. no skimming.
1. remove neons from packaging. before cutting or applying any velcro, look under your dash with the neon to test the location. look for some 1-1.5in long flat spots for the velcro.
2. cut the velcro into anywhere between1 and 1.5 inches. pull the backing off so you can stick one side to the neon. its easier to peel the backing off and place both sides on the neon. now, with the backing already off, place the neon in the desired location.
3. when ready to do so, repeat on other side(passenger/driver).
4.to remove the console:
- there are 10 screws/bolts to remove. im not sure of their sizes,
but i can tell you the location.
- two bolts in the console under the armrest. you do not need to
remove the screws hoding the armrest itself in.
- two screws in the cupholders(1 each)
- these are a little interesting to get to. slide both seats back as
far as they will go. now, look under the seats at the side of the
console. there should be a small plastic oval insert there. pry it
out on each side carefully. that is where the other two bolts are.
- up under the dash, there are another two bolts under more
oval covers. same idea there.
- now these are the hardest to get to. i ended up breaking mine
off. the are two nuts you have to remove. both are pretty far
back, so you might have to search a little. start feeling under
the console from in front of the cubby. if you cant find them, you
should remove the trim around the radio, followed by the cubby
itself. to remove radio, carefully reach into the cubby. there
should be a lip or something to grab the trim panel with.
carefully pull it out. dont worry about the ring around the
ignition. it just pops in. now that you have it loose, you have to
disconnect the hazard lights, the ets switch, and the cig lighter.
- i believe that once you have all the screws on the outside
removed and the radio trim is out of the way, the cubby just
pops out. you should be able to get the the last to nuts now.
- turn the ignition on to move the shifter to neutral. and, pull the
ebrake up. to make it easier later, start to work the boot
around the ebrake up as far as you can right now.
- once the shifter is in neutral, CAREFULLY pry the trim around
the base of the shifter up and over the shifter.
- last step, just carfully pull the console out, starting at the rear.
5. to wire the neons in, double check the they are placed in a location that is not going to affect your access to the pedals. if the came with cig lighter adapters, use your wire cutters to cut them off, leaving as much wire on the neon as possible. now, strip a 1/4 inch off the wire on each side. test them using the cig lighter to find the correct polarity. as soon as you finish finding the correct polarity, get under the hood and remove the cig lighter fuse to avoide possible shock. find the negative side(the one that was connected to the black wire on the cig lighter when they were lit) and strip an additional 1.5 inches off the wire. remove a bolt from the base of the shifter, something bolted to the chassis, and wrap this wire around it. you will need to repeat this for the other neon. this bolt, once installed in its original location will be our ground. depending on the switch you use, this installation may take several routes. basicly, find a switch you want. strip a section of the cig lighter positive wire(the red one in most cases). just a VERY small section though. DO NOT CUT. now, take the other neon wire, and wrap it around the wire you just stripped. your neon should work. now, remove the wire you just attached to the positive wire. you will need about 1 foot of the wire you chose to use earlier. strip off .5 in off both ends of two strips. now, wrap one end of one wire around the cig lighter positive wire. make sure the other end does not touch anything! it will be hot and possible electrical shock may result. take the other wire you just stripped and attach it to the neon wire still left(ground should already be bolted to chassis.) using your switch of choice, use some electrical tape to attach the only two loose ends of wire you should have to test the function of the switch.
6. now, you need to find a place to install your switch. i chose to hide mine behind the front edge of the drivers seat. carfully cut a hole where you want your switch. remember, you can always remove material, but you cant put it back. once you have the hole to the proper size, attach the switch as you please. now, get out your soldering iron and attach the two wires taped to the switch.
7. all that is left is to install everything back in and sit back to enjoy. just follow the above steps in reverse, after installing BOTH neons. i would like to see a pic of your work once completed.
note:
VERY IMPORTANT
remove the fuse for the cig lighter during this installation to prevent accidental electrical shock. only replace when power is needed to test or installation is complete.
if any1 sees any errors, feel free to make a note. i may have missed it. i was in a hurry b4 work to get it done.
