I looked through about 7 pages of this part of the forum and couldn't find an answer to my question, so I'll post it. :D

I'd like to get 20" rims, with 225/35/20 tires, and I have a 99 SE. If I were to do this, would I be able to lower the car at all? I saw in one post where someone lowered a 99+ 2" with 225/35/19 tires, and in another post where someone said you could, in fact, have 20" rims on a GA.

Anybody have pictures of a GA on 20" wheels?

Thanks for the help.

Going to need some bigger, badder breaks.

I'm not sure, because I haven't seen any GA's with 20's on them. I've seen the 18's and there's a lot of room left, which I don't really like the look of. Anyone got a picture of a lowered GA on 18's?

If you plus size your rims properly the overall diameter of the wheel shouldn't change much at all . The wheel well gap will be the same untill you lower the vehicle no matter what size rim . ( unless the tire and rim combo is alot bigger than stock diameter , which isn't a good idea ) But a GA will look like a steam roller on 20's anyway ... :roll2:

20's? Jeez... you'll be riding on rubber bands.. And the ride will suck majorly... Get some 18's or 19's.. They'll suit the car nicely.. and you won't be lookin like a 4x4

I ask just the same as everyone else. why friggin 20's? And if you add it up right, last time I checked a 225 isnt going to be large enough for 20's and keeping your spedo correct. And good luck trying to find a good tire to go with them that wont cost you an arm and a leg. Why 20's? Personally I ask the same about 19's. Do you know how much extra weight that is? A 20 can run you up to 40 lbs PER RIM. Hell even a stock rim and tire combo weighs in around 30-35 lbs ( depending on the rims and tires of course ). Just be smart and do the 18's. I honestly dont see the point in putting on 20's considering that you will have to massively upgrade your brakes as well as your power levels just to get the damn thing rolling. And have you considered fuel economy? Your going to be as bad as a damn truck. DOnt do it. Plz, for the sake of your pride and car, dont go with 20's.

Rofl..okay, I won't go with 20's. :P I probably will go with some 18's and lower it a couple inches.

I just looked at the rims on my car today and noticed something. I knew they weren't stock already. They're "Eagle" something brand rims, and pretty much look like crap. They're not shiny or anything, and are pretty boring. Anyways, I noticed that they're only a 15! They look REALLY big to be 15's, and I was even guessing them to be 17's! The tires say 15, though, and tires usually don't lie about that.

I'm trying to decide on tuner wheels or stylish chrome wheels. I don't really think the tuner rims would look [to my likings] good on the GA. Ahh..decisions decisions..

What size tires are on it now? Do you drive rather fast around turns? The tires probably look like dog dookey because of sidewall flex or possible riding on the sidewalls in turns.

As for the wheels, have you tried using "Hot Rims" from meguiars. It cleans well. It won't make shine where there is none, but it will get grime off to allow shine to show through. It's safe for most wheels, but tread carefully.

Also are you aware of how tire size works? The first number is width the second is the heighth as a percentage of width. You need to make sure your outside diameter is the same, so convert 20 inches to milimeters and add that 225*35%*2 to get the overall diameter. Then compare that to the stock size. If the diameter is the same, then you should be fine. 35 sounds a bit high for 20 inch rims. You'll most likely need something more on the rubber band side of things. Any way you will pay a small fortune for racing tires that will wear out quickly but handle great doing it.

I say personally get 16 or 17 inch wheels, but 18 would be okay also. Look over the factory wheels for this generation as a starting point if you need ideas. I think the GA comes with great wheels, and great premium wheels if you get the upgrade.

I mentioned this in another post, but just for the heck of it,

go to http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/brochure/interactive/tmpInteractive.jsp

they have a simulator to give you an idea of what wheels will look like on a GA. You can choose many different styles and see what the different diameters look like. The GA in my opnion looks good with 17 inch wheels, but the 20s weren't bad either. their site has a seperate page that gives the plus information for changing wheel size and what wheels are said to work best on our car.

Also, be aware of what his stock size is. A GT will start with a 215/55/R16 while SE's can differ. My own ones are 215/60R15's and plus sizing them to a 17 would be a 225/45R17 or even a 235/45/R17. Just though id put that in incase his are similar to mine.

Mine are 215/60R15

What's the R? I don't really understand tire sizing. The 20's I was talking about earlier are actually 225/35ZR20, but I didn't know the letters made a difference. :P

Thanks for all the information, guys!

*edit* Hey blue, do you have stock rims still on your car? The ones in your avatar look like mine. Do you have a closer/bigger picture of the rims?

GT's come with 225/50R16 if you get the premium wheels.

The R is the radius of the wheel. That Z doesn't really belong in the tire size. What the Z is is the speed rating. Z tires are rated to go 150 mph or so without problems. They are supposed to be almost limitless in speed. It also means they are more expensize than the fatory tires which are V rated. They go up to 149.

I haven't done the math, but I'd be happier if you got 225/30/r20 instead. That would be a skinny low profile tire and would keep you speedomoter in range. As far as getting Z or not, don't worry about it. Our cars don't go that fast. The 30 ratio would be absurdly expensive though

Yeah..I think I'm just going to get 18's..maybe 19's, but I'm not sure yet. I'm thinking maybe a 2" drop or something along with the 18's would look really good. I just thought that I had 17" rims on my car now, but they turned out to be 15's. They really don't look like 15's. :P

That site might help you out. I wouldn't go bigger then 18's unless you like that Rap car look...not for me. Selling my rims for a nice pair of ASA's and Yokohama parada spec 2's which hold the road better then any tire I've had.....good luck, if you do decide to lower the car go with the Eibach prolow kit only drops the height about 1.25-1.5 and would probably be ok with 19-20inch wheels.

prototypepacifi, yea those are my current stock 15's. Ive got some 17's that ive got ordered up from the states. Unfortunatly, ive been trying to find a nice 17 that only weights around 18 -19 lbs but alas, they are all uber expensive to ship up here and I would be looking at about 1500$ CDN just for a nice set from tirerack. Now I gotta put up with 17's that weigh in around 27 lbs. As for pictures, yea, I have some more in the members ride section. I have to update them all because a bunch got deleted in various server crashes. Dont worry, ive been spending money like crazy so they will look much better.

R does not mean Radius, It means Radial. For Example in the tire size 225/50R16. The tires tread is 225mm wide. An aspect ratio of 50 - meaning that the sidewall is 50% the width of the tread, in this case 112.5mm. The R means its a Radial tire.. you can also have HR, VR or ZR there. So it DOES belong in the tire size. But yes they do stand for the speed rating of the tire and not all tires will have it. And last but not least the 16 meaning of course 16 inch inside diameter or 16 inch wheel.. also the only part of the tire size that isnt metric for some reason.. lol.. I guess it doesnt really matter, but now you know all about tire sizes. Next week.. Wheels.. JK

Hey man, I have 20s on mine. Everyone told me not to as well, and said they would rub/ride horrid/etc. They fit fine. Mine only rubbed in the rear for about 50 miles, and took about 1/8" if that off of my tire in a spot about as wide as your finger, cant even notice. The front doesnt rub at all. If you go with a tuner style wheel your brakes will be ok for a bit as well. Mine breaks and accelerates almost the same as it did with the stock 16's. Its not that bad man, if you want the 20s, get the 20s. Dont let everyone talk you out of what YOU want, because YOU are the one driving it!
