manual shift linkage..

the other day i was doing an aggressive shift from first to second gear and everyone thought i missed a gear. i kept trying to put in gear and keep moving, but there was nothing there. it seemed that the linkage locked up. the only gear i could get at first was was 5th gear, but then i finally got first and third. no reverse. if i pull real real slow out if 5th i can sometimes manage to get fourth, but thats it. has this happened to anyone else?

If you look between the engine and the firewall you will see two cables coming out of the center of the firewall and arcing to the driverside to the transmission. One cable gives you the forward or back position of the shift lever (1/2, 3/4, 5/R), the other gives you which gate.

It sounds like the forward/back cable broke or came off the end. This will then only give you 1,3 or 5.

Pop off the shifter boot and you can see how it works and if they are moving. When you get it fixed, lube the cables and the ball in the center.
