Hmmm, not many polishes will protect... Depending on the finish of your wheels (are they painted?), you can apply a coat of wax, which will protect them much like it will your paint. Try it on a hidden area, see how it turns out.

... I'd pick up some of the 'old technology' Turtle Wax as it goes on very think and actually leaves a 'coat' of wax ... it is not something that I would do to paint, but, on rims you'd be fine :)

"Never Dull" is available in most auto stores. It comes in a can. It's basically cotton soaked in a solutiion. You wipe it on, let it haze over, and buff it off like a wax. It cleans and protects. It works very well on machine faced aluminum as well as chrome rims.

I wouldn't use any harsh cleansers or compounds on clearcoated wheels. Also, if you have Chrometech factory wheels, its definately not a good idea. I just wash mine thoroughly with the car wash/water bucket I use when i wash my war. As for protecting, I just use whatever wax I am using on my car. If you keep them waxed, the brake dust and other road grime is easy to remove with the normal hand washing you do to your car anyway.

Yeah, that worked well for me also. But, other people's cars I wash are not so well protected. I've found that a coating of Never-dull, which isn't abrasive, works well. You don't have it use it with every wash, but it does help. Also, in spring, when it gets warm, I remove the wheels altogether, and get the back side of the wheels that you can't reach. That's where this works really well. Since you can't get to that area often, if you protect it with never dull while the wheel is off, the dirt won't stick there again, and it will come clean when you wash the car and the soap gets in there.

I always used wax on the rims that were on my saturn and never had a problem
