Hey guys well i had my muffler and tips changed to magnaflow stainless steel. well i would like some more perf. and louder sound than now. so i call my auto shop up and asked a guy that works there (the owner was gone and all knowledge for the shop with him went too) about changing the downpipe to to 3 inch and changing the from the cat back to 2.5! he said that i wont get much power and a little sound from changing all that. now from what i understand from you guys that changing all that would make a huge diff. in sound and power! this guy also said its not going to make a diff. in changing the downpipe which i think will make a big diff. he also said that there is alot of flow already in a 2002 gagt. i dont think this guys knows JACK SHIT!! im going to wait till the owner comes back net week!

if you get rid of the resonator then youll get a lot more sound. my muffler shop wont take mine out cus they say ill get pulled over for it being too loud.
when i got my 3" downpipe and cat the sound got a bit louder. the only way youre going to notice any change in power is if your cat is clogged (hair ball  j/k) or if you get mandrel pipes, and even then youll loose some low end if you go any bigger than 2.5". if you get 2.5" with either crush bend or pressure bent then at the crimps itll be about 2.25" which is whats stock anyway.
he was incorrect but your expectations are set way high and this might explain why he didnt want to do the work.

anytime you change out stock piping for something bigger but reasonable your gonna get some gain from it. Trust me,if you remove your resonator your not going to get pulled over, thats crap right there! I dunno why everyone that has exhaust done has to pay for mandrel bent piping, all the exhaust shops here do that all the time, they don't do crush bends unless its a tight turn/bend. Ive had my car up on the lift twice and I looked at all my piping, all smooth bends and I didn't pay much for the new piping to be installed. Im thinking about getting a high flow cat and a bigger downpipe, prolly 2.5 or so since it might be a tight bend.

I think this is my first post:)
My first mod was 2.5" from the cat back, hf cat, muffler and tips. I didn't notice much of a gain even when I put on my CAI. Ran my best time with that setup so far (14.956).
The main reason (IMHO) for upgrading to a larger exhaust is to support other mods which 'bring more in'. When increasing flow in, you need to increase flow out.
If you plan on boosting your car in the near future and running more than 6psi, i'd go 3". I went with a big cam and that's the reason I went to 2.5".
As for Mandrel bends, it is much better for flow, but you will never see a difference with only a CAI.
I would recommend a resonator as it takes out the high pitched 'snapple' of the exhaust note. I've heard a few GA's without a resonator and they sound very 'tinny'. I'm using a Magnaflow muffler right now and many say it sounds really nice. With the cam in it sort of sounds like a small block V8 :D
Now I just need headers & down pipe!!! Maybe if i'm lucky i'll get into the high 13's low 14's:)
