Looks to be some kind of pressure valve or something for the coolant. Looks like it is part of the other lines that run in front of the valvecover. Not sure though?

the doohicky you are seeing is a bleeder for the coolant system. once the resevoiur is full you allow the car to run untill its hot. then loosen-DO NOT REMOVE the top nut on that DOOHICKY. DO THIS SLOWLY you will notice what appears to be bubbles coming out , let it bubble until a steady stream of water comes out then tighten . let the car cool a bit so you can check the coolant level .
bubbles in your coolant system is bad stuff.

The bleed valve for the coolant is over on the left (towards the "3" in "3100"), what he's referring to is that thing below the oil cap, next to the oil dipstick. I'm puzzled as to what that is as well. I was thinking some kind of relocated fuel pressure regulator but then the big hose going into it doesn't look like fuel-related really... Plus the stock FPR is still there. There seem to be two of these things as well, one on either side of the UIM and the piping going to it is obviously been hand brazed/welded so it's some kind of custom something or other (maybe turbo related???)...
Nice engine though, it's an LG8 ;)
Oh yeah old post indeed though!!! Back from the dead!!!
