Hey guys,
I've got a buddy who recently got an '02 GA and he loves it. He has also gone mad about squeezing every ounce of power out of it. He's been looking around eBay for performance parts to boost his horsepower and I'm trying to convine him that anything he finds for less than $500 will likely have little or no affect on performance. I've managed to keep him away from the obvious junk like the +HP chips and the like. He has, however, come across a "performance" airfilter kit. He truly believes that this will increase performance.
What do you guys think? Will this have any noticable affect on performance? Are there other things you'd recommend that would give him a boost? Thanks for your help.
Here is the specific auction link as of June 11th, 2005:

Looks like a high quality CAI system to me. Could theoretically add 20 horses if done right.

I don't think 20 horses... I don't think you can go wrong with CAI for <$70 or you could just make your own. However, that is a ton of clamps to be using.

I'm not so sure about this kit. It looks like it's more for show than for performance.
And do you guys think it's good to point the air filter down next to the battery and washer fluid reservoir? I guess they think you'd get cooler air down there? It looks like you might end up restricting air flow and sucking up all the dirt that can build up down there.

It goes into the fender wall and there will be no dirt getting sucked in becasue u have a filter and those kits are just as good as any others just remember that they dont always come withinstructions.

I realize that dirt won't go into the engine because of the filter, but what I meant was that that filter might get dirty faster being down there.
But performance-wise, what do you think. How much horsepower gain should I tell him to expect?

I'd say 15 hp

buy one from a forum member, it should have info in my sig, plus there is no "ribbed for pleasure" pipe which causes turbulence and disrupts flow (reduces power).

ANytime anyone say it will add XX hp or it will ad 'up to' XX hp that means on a heavily modded motor you could see that gain but typically on a stock or close to stock motor your gains will be fractional.

You will get about 5-6 hp gain with that setup, which is about as good as it get with a cold air intake. I ran the same intake, along with an SLP exhaust and got 17 hp gain. The setup works well, and the gains are there. When you install the intake, be sure to remove the drivers side headlight and route the filter to where there is 360 degrees of clearance around the filter. Be sure to remove all stock plumbing while you are in there. I haven't had any problems with excess dirt or water getting into the filter. The 5-6 hp gain is what you could expect ona stock motor with noother mods, I probably gained a bit more with the exhaust installed, since it revved higher and moved the powerband uop a bit. mopowr79

So I should tell my buddy to expect 5-6 HP on his stock setup? He's also wondering what's mods are best to do to get him to 190HP quickly.

intake and exhaust should get him to 190 at the crank...
wheel would be intake, exhaust, headers

I would HIGHLY recommend just saving your money and invest it into a Doctor Speed Stage 3. Doctor Speed adds a REAL K&N cone filter which is 40-50 if you buy it seperate, which is better than what this kit has. I feel that the weird blue corrugated tube does do some restricting to the airflow, where Dr.Speed is smooth all the way. Just the cold air intake will add 6-10hp, definately nothing over 15hp. A friend of mine with headers, throttle body, cold air intake, SLP, magnaflow cat, MSD/NGK plugs and wires dynojetted at 182 at the wheel.

Your looking at a 5-7 WHP gain with this intake. As everyone stated, id stay away from the ribs as they wont give you anything good and will probably cause more turbulance throwing off your MAF and the such. Just buy one from Keith, as he will supply you with a K&N filter alont with instructions and a full kit. As for dirt, up north here It gets extremely dirty during the winter months and I wouldnt suggest going through huge puddles that come up past your tire, besides that though, the only hard part is having to remove the tire to recharge your filter.

yea. go with dr.speed. i just installed mine... have video clips before and after in other threads
not a huge power gain, but the sound is awsome...and the power gain is noticable too.... about 5-10 like everyone else has said.
(one clip is http://www.gaownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44231 )
its a noticable difference, but he will smoke a standard Monte Carlo as it is... if he really wants something... nos, s/c, or a turbo will get him there quickly.

Like mopowr79 said, you can add a free flowing intake and get some horsepower. To get the full effect, you have to replace/change all the elements to get air to flow through the engine.
Just putting the filter on will give you a small gain but you're still pushing air through the same throttle body, valves and exhaust.
