I just came across an Underdrive pulley on ebay claiming it can add 6-8HP. Now do these really work like that or is this a load of bull?

Cutting parasitic loss helps a tad, but it isn't that noticeable. I did some comparison runs at the 1/4 track awhile ago... runs with the stock pulley, then runs with the serpentine belt completely off. Only .1 off the ET... maybe .2 at the most.

I'd be weary of pulleys from unknown companies. If you're looking for a cheap underdrive pulley, grab a stock one from a 90-94 HO... they are slightly smaller stock.

I just put one on my GAGT and it is very noticable. Smoother shifts, better top end, and better gas mileage. No side effects (as of now).

SO its decided. I will buy it for my next upgrade.

Still, I don't see it hurting anything especially if you don't have a high amount of audio equipment running.

What would you consider a "high amount"? I have a set of subs, aftermarket speakers, and a head unit. Soon I will be adding a 5" screen and an inverter to power my Mac mini.

On the V6, you only lose 0.1 volts off the alternator at idle...I don't imagine you lose much more (if any) with the 2.3L.

I wouldn't worry about the audio system thing...your electrical system is only affected at idle.

For about $150 for everything (pulley, belt, lubricants) you can.

Like I said... not a huge difference - the parasitic loss on the Quad 4 serpentine belt is minimal (with AC off) since the powersteering and water pumps are cam/timing chain (respectively) driven and can't be underdriven like on the V6's.

I'd be a bit weary with all those accessories. I've popped 4 alternators in 5 years thanx to the stereo amps alone. Keep an eye on your charging system health... get a voltage gauge if you don't have one.

No, voltage is nearly constaint (regulated) and does not vary by RPM. Being underdriven affects the amount of current an alternator can supply. Yes, it will be an additional strain on the battery at idle, but the higher cruising RPM of the Quad 4 will even it out assuming you aren't stuck idling for hours.
