I usually use 89 (mid grade) but its not necessary. Our cars are designed to run on regular (87 octane). There will not be any real advantage to using higher than that. I guess just preference. I have heard that it is a good idea to avoid gas stations where you see a gas trunk filling the station tanks because the gas flowing in will stir up the dirt and could end up in your tank, this might be just speculation though. Just keep the fuel filter and fuel injectors in your car clean, and all should be well.

3400 is 9.5:1 static compression only requires 87 Octane.
Lucky wife gets to burn the cheep stuff.

In my Grand National I ahve to run atleast 91, but since they only sell 87, 89, or 93 I have to buy 93.
And in my bike I run atleast 93 but typically 94 when it's avalible.

It was probably carbon knock, most people don't know the difference.

Higher octane fuel is basically more stable, and burns slower.
93 used in a car that requires 87 is a waste. Actually with the additives used to raise the octane rating it reduces the actual fuel content per unit. Fuel is stored enegry, so less fuel less power avalible. So running higher octane when not required you're getting less for your money.

Carbon knock is a result of carbon deposits that build up in the combustion chamber or on the piston top. Along with the decreased volume at TDC, which in turn raises the compression ratio, carbon also tends to hold more heat resulting in light denotation or pre-ignition.

Damn....I'm still driving around on the same tank of gas I got from the dealer  However, I do wish the gas was cheaper on this end Massachusetts... 87 octane is still going for $1.66 , and 89 oct. is $1.77

I run mid grade or higher. 2003 3400. I get about 10-12 mpg better doing about 80-85 for 400 miles. Thats enough of a diff for me.:chev:

Think about this one then...
I don't put anything less than 91 in my car...mixing fuel ratios=inconsistent performance...
Price for my gas 83.9 cents/Liter
4 Liters in a gallon...= $3.36 per gallon
CAD/USD ratio 1.39:1
$3.36*1.39= $ 4.67
Basically...I'm paying the equivalent of $4.67 per gallon for fuel.

Man I hate living so bloody far north!

i use 87 then 94 and alternate back and forth.

94 octane maybe not give you more power, but is it true that is has less sulfur and create less carbon deposits?

i pay about 50-60 cents a litre.
