ok my motor is all back toghter for the 3rd time, and my push rods are still ticking, can someone please explain the proper way to install push rods for this motor just to make sure i am doing this right, so far lifters, push rods, heads have been changed to solve this and its still ticking. need you to put on them brain caps for me please. thanks
The exhaust rods are the longest. Check all the rods for straightness by rolling them on a smooth surface like a piece of plate glass. If they wobble the rod is bent and should be replaced. Make sure the rods are seated in the lifters and just tighten them down till the bolts bottom.
If you done all the above properly and you still have noise the problem maybe elsewhere.
If the noise is heavy it could possibly be a rod knock.
I have a similar problem with my Malibu, I'm solving it this weekend.

My Haynes book just say make sure to lube the rockers with clean oil before you install them. It also said when you remove them start at the one by the belt first.

That's what you get for letting a 3100 over heat :poke:

No this engine has hydraulic lifters you just have to bottom out the lifter bolts. The lifter self-adjusts.

I dont wanna be a pain in the butt.. but you do know that mileage on an engine causes all parts to wear out.. valves... cyl. and so one... specially a cam in paticular because once a car has 120 000 miles on it.. people we say it runs just as good the day the bought it...
Do this dyno the car the day you buy and dyno at 120k miles... your numbers will be worse..
Overtime your cams will wear out a few thousands of an inch for every some odd miles... and over time it will wear out so bad ticking forms.. and re torquing your rockers help.. but not a fix...
Your entire valve train would be wearing out ... but if you bought a new cam or cams.. and new valvetrain.. i would be your response power and noises would drastically be different...
So personally if you had it apart 3 times.. and tried persistantly to fix this.. there is a chance your parts are worn down too much

ok doobies, here is what i have changed so far and maybe this might enlighten this motor for ya, i purchased a set of stage 3 heads , and stage 2 lower intake and upper intake, brand new lifters, brand new push rods, crank bearings, high flow oil pump, accel coil packs , taylor wires 8.8, and had the block honed and magnifluxed so i dont think i have any worn out parts, it just seems to be like something is loose and ticking, because after i started it and removed the valve covers 2 of the 6 were loose again.

Mention a new cam. Not that I'm a mechanic, but if you replaced yours rods and lifters, why not the cam? You may have a flat lobe.

just to let ya know a stage 3 head set up will not run on a stock cam so yes it was a huge must to be changed, and had to be custom made. TY red
And Yes it is finally running!!!!!!!!! And man does she flat A** FlY
And the hole dam problem with all the ticking was i had to switch to the old style Lower intake gasket with out push rod guides.
Here is the motor now, the scrathes will be fixed soon. Caused by taking apart 5 times to solve problem. And the rest of the loom will be put on this week sometime.

You've gotta be sh****** me! The gasket with pushrod guides was causing the noise problem? Do you know why?
I didn't pay that much attention when I removed the old gasket to notice whether it had pushrod guides or not. As a matter of fact, when I first went to get the gasket, I took home the one without pushrod guides. I then returned it for fear that I needed the pushrod guides and would have to tear it apart again when the gasket w/o did not work.
I guess if you have any reason why the guides would cause all of the clatter, I would like to know. Also, if I left the gasket with the guides in my engine, will it cause any problems / damage?

Sorry, I posted before I was finished with my train of thought.
What prompted you to try to change the gasket type? Was it just a hunch, or were you advised to do so? If so, by whom?
I suppose if I had to tear into the engine again, it would not be too bad. At least I know how to go about it now.

well what they will do is push to rods forward and and make it so they arent sitting in the rocker properly and hardley get any oil to the top of the engine and properly lubricate the rocker arm and this is why it was ticking, because even though the oil pump was pushing oil up there, it wasent getting where it needed to be. And just from the small amount of time that i ran the motor it already starterd to wear a grove into the rocker guide on the gasket. So if this the same thing yours is doing it will eventually wear a grove in your rocker arm due to lack of oil. the only other thing that is differnet between our engines is that mine is all setup with stage 3 compontes, cam, heads, LIM, UIM, throttle body, accel coil packs, tyler wires 8.8, 50/50 shot of nitrous and a computer programer from hypertech. This is why I was so pissed when it didnt run correctly, way to much money invested.
