I want to install 6.5 inch component speakers in the front doors of my 1999 grand am se(duh), but the holes are 4x6. I saw the thread that shows a 5.25 inch installation, but can it also be done with a 6.5, and if so, how?

although i have a 96....i too have 4x6 in fronts stock...i just took that out along w/ the bracket that holds it in, then i just drilled in the 6.5 speaker to the door, then i put alot of masking tape around the speaker....kinda ghetto...but it was super easy...fast install, and sounds great....

Any place that sells Metra, which is pretty much any car audio shop. :)

i did the same thing at first kinda drilled holes in the door and made it work.. sounded better but i bought the basic metra adapter off ebay for a 6.5 speaker and the sound difference was huge.. so i would recomend just getting that

You can get the 4x6 to 6.5 adapter here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7981490068&category=38636&sspagename=WDVW
Shipping is 5 bucks in US
I think considering it will be a clean install it's worth it.

I got my mb quarts 5.25. to fit in the front fine.....but I put them up front and personal...I didn't hide them behind the stock grills. They fit nicely.

Alright man, here is what I know. I put those SAME EXACT speakers in my '01 GAGT front doors. All you have to do is use the 'spacer' that Alpine gives you with the speakers and use it to screw the speakers into the door. I had to snap off the little 'tabs' that are on the spacer, but once that was done....no problem. All in all it was a pretty simple install. I have some pictures of it on my cadomain site, but you can't really see the way that I did it, just where I mounted the tweeters. Oh well hope I helped, if you have any other questions just ask. I did everything in my car myself.

Do you use the 4x6 bracket also or are you saying that you just mount the speakers and spacers straight onto the door?
Also, how do they sound? You seem to have a setup similar to mine
(I have an Alpine CDA9831 deck, Alpine Type S 6x9s, Alpine Type S 12 inch sub on Alpine MRD 300 mono amp pushing 300 watts RMS)

I didn't use the 4x6 brackets, I just used the Alpine spacers they gave you.
