I have a 1986 grand am that needs to be fixed up but everyone tells me its too old to add anything on to it.
Do you know anything i can add onto it or do to it to make it look better besides the obvious ( tint & Rims )
Also the clear coat is chipping off in large areas is there a product or something i can use to smooth it out without painting?

If you are trying to customize on a budget then I'd say no, it's not possible. Your best bet would be to find a custom body shop and let them put a universal side air dam / ground effects kit on it. A two tone paint scheme would go well on those models also. Do you have a rear spoiler on it and does it have large bumpers on the side like some of the 80's models do? Does it have a front chin spoiler with fog lights?
Post up a pic if you can. This site is in desperate need on older GAs. We've been buried in 200* models.
As far as saving the paint, sorry but it won't happen. In a few months that paint will be gone completly. Once it breaks the clearcoat you have waterbased paint underneath and it will not withstand the elements. Don't use a cleaner wax because it will pull the paint off imediatly. You can try adding a carnuba wax to the paint, but really you are only putting chewing gum on a broken bone.

Start with the body work, get i tall smooth and have someone paint it, even if it's a Macco job. Don't waste your time or money on something with a bad body. BTW its not too old. I'd like to find a 3rd generation GA (specifically a turbo one) to customize. If done right a older car can wow people more than the typical cars they see everyday.
BTW don't tell Steve it's too old.
Hopefully his car inspires you.

Not everyone has the cash for a newer car or for the insurance that comes with it.
Besides I think doing th eolder GA up would make more a statement than having something everyone else has.
