RCMP rev up for car show
Police boost presence after hooligans marred last year's Atl. Nationals
Last year, a handful of hooligans burned some rubber and tarred Moncton with a national media brush that splattered both the Atlantic Nationals Automotive Extravaganza and the Codiac RCMP in the process.

This year, a zero tolerance policy and the means to back it up are in the works to protect the good names of the city, its police, and our biggest annual event, which runs tomorrow through Sunday.

RCMP say there will be no repeat this weekend of last year's dangerous situation when an impromptu post-Atlantic Nationals display of car burnouts shut down the intersection of Mountain Road and Purdy Avenue. While the event had no direct connection to the Atlantic Nationals, the burnouts were no doubt encouraged by the up to 1,000 spectators who gathered in the street looking for action after the annual event wrapped up.

This year, the Mounties say they are prepared to put the brakes on any shenanigans before things get out of hand. To do that they're turning to an arsenal that includes a helicopter (with night vision), a motorcycle and bike patrols.

In addition there will be a complement of "many extra members on duty" and what Codiac RCMP calls a "power shift" of nine members assigned specifically to the Atlantic Nationals.

The RCMP helicopter is perhaps the most dramatic example of plans to keep things safe and fun for the thousands of people who will descend on the city this weekend. It will be used night and day at various times throughout the weekend, monitoring Metro Moncton for the first signs of trouble and dispatching units on the ground.

Two-wheeled transport in the form of bike patrols and even a police motorcycle will help get the police places cars can't go.

"We want people to enjoy the event the safest way they can," Const. Michel Mercier said. "We were lucky no one was hurt last year."

Saying the force plans to be proactive and highly visible from the onset to avoid becoming the heavy hand of the law later, he said there will be zero tolerance for traffic violation troublemaking.

Al Boulianne of Codiac's Traffic division repeated Mercier's message of zero tolerance.

"As soon as there's a squealing tire, there's going to be a ticket," he said.

Boulianne also had a word for those who watched events unfold at Mountain and Purdy last year. Whether they shouted encouragement or were horrified by what they saw, they fed it by standing and watching. "People don't realize the watching is encouraging," he said.

I'll be in Moncton on Sunday, but it's for another event - the Moncton Motorsports Club and the Atlantic Sports Car Club are co-hosting an autoslalom at the Moncton Coliseum all day.

I'll also be in my other car - a Mazda 323 that I've built specifically for competition, as the GA just goes thru parts too quickly for this kind of racing. It's not painted yet, but so far I've won my class in every event....

It wasn't a bad weekend, lots of nice cars with good old horsepower and superchargers. Only a few got tickets.

Maine trooper ticketed at car show

True to their word, Codiac Regional RCMP members patrolling Metro Moncton streets spent the weekend writing traffic tickets to drivers out squealing tires, doing spins on the road and any other traffic infraction in the wake of the 2005 Atlantic Nationals Automotive Extravaganza this weekend.

Police issued a total of 44 tickets from Friday through Sunday night, including one ticket to a Maine State Trooper and participant in the automotive show. The vast majority of culprits caught by police were not participants in the show but spectators caught up in the excitement.

Police had warned of zero tolerance for anyone caught, said RCMP spokesman Const. Michel Mercier. The state trooper caught spinning his wheels was a perfect example, he said.

Another participant was caught Friday squealing his tires and not only ticketed but banned from the show by organizers.

The RCMP helicopter which circled the city for most of the weekend was both a deterrent and a great assistance in spotting and identifying drivers caught breaking traffic laws, Mercier added.

One vehicle was towed away because it was not street legal. The driver failed to produce a valid driver's licence.

In another incident, a motorcyclist was ticketed after doing a front wheelie for the onlookers.

Police recovered a 1969 Camaro, one of the entries in the show, after it was stolen Saturday night. The vehicle sustained limited damages, said Mercier.

While there were numerous tickets issued, there were no serious problems associated with the show which drew thousands of people to Moncton to admire the vehicles.

Last year, a group of drivers not involved in the show set up an impromptu drag strip along Mountain Road near Purdy Avenue after the show and did burn-outs and tire squealing before scores of onlookers. Police eventually broke up the gathering and issued tickets and arrested one or two individuals. This year, police vowed they would be ready if anyone tried to break the law.
