Ok, I'm looking at putting some subs in my car. The subs that I would really like to get are the Alpine type-R's. Hopefully I will be able to get two of them. Would you recommend these subs?
Also, if I got these, could I get an amp powerful enough to power both at once? Or would I have to get two mono amps or what?
All help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Those subs are amazing, so get them if you can. And, yes, you can get an amp powerful enough to thump those subs. All you would need for them is a nice 1000-watt RMS mono block amp and you'll be very, very happy. I used to run 2 12" type R's off a MTX 8500D amp, and holy shit was that awesome. I had to sell the amp for money, so I downgraded to 2 MTX 4250D's, one powering each sub, and it just didn't thump like it used to. It's also much easier to control the gains, bass, etc. from one amp then trying to make the setting exactly the same on 2 amps. Just look around for a nice 1000-watt mono amp, post here when you find one, and we'll let you know what we think!

I looked at the mrd-1005 and it said it was only 1000 watts at 2 ohms. Is there any way to wire 2 alpine type-r's down to 2 ohms? I looked at a chart thing and I could only see ways to wire them at 4 ohms and at 1 ohm.

They have Type R's that are 2-ohm if I'm not mistaken...

Ok, I found the 2-ohm subs and I found them for a very good price. I also found the Alpine MRD-M605 amp that pushes 600w x 1 at 2 ohms which is perfect, and is much cheaper than the mrd-1005

A few more questions, 10" or 12"? I'm thinking 12 but I dunno, 10 might be better with trunk space etc.
Also, what is a good way to connect all the wires together cause it looks like I have to splice the + and the - wires together. This is what I'm looking at, its a good site: http://www.jlaudio.com/tutorials/wiring/index.html

Why are you getting a 600 watt rms amp when the 2005 versions of the Type R's handle 500 watts rms a piece. Man go with a 1000 watt rms amp... Or go with a JBL 1200.1. That would set those Alpines up nice. People have ran 700 rms at each Type R daily with no problem. Nice subs. I was sooooooo close to getting two of those for my new setup, but I am going with a single 15.... as for what size.. depends... 10's are more punchy and 12's will get lower.

Hmm ok, I think I will go with the 10"s for multiple reasons. I also did not know that the 2k5 versions of the type-r's were 500 rms. All I saw online were ones that were 300 rms. I'll keep looking. As for my wiring question, I will have to splice the wires together correct? What is the best way to do this?

You don't have to go with the newest version of them, either. I ran my Type R's wayyyyyy back in '01, and those were the 300 watt versions, and they still rocked hardcore. Go with the current setup we discussed. It'll end up being cheaper and rock just as hardcore! But, go with the 12", though. The 10" are alot punchier and don't get as much of a slam going.
Oh, and if you have no idea what you're doing installing this, don't do it yourself! Just pay the 50 bucks at a car audio shop and have them do it for you. I recommend that the HIGHEST gauge wire you go is 4, but use 2 or 0 if you can.

Ok, I think I will go with the older 12" then. And its not that I don't know what I'm doing, I'm just not sure on the best way to splice the wires. Ive installed amps, multiple sets of speakers and many HU so I should be fine, this will be my first try with subs though, thats why i'm curious how to splice the wires together. Can I just use soder/solderless butt connectors?

I just got my 2 12" type r's the other day and my alpine 9853 HU. I am going to be wiring them up with a rockford 1001BD amp that is 1000 RMS X1 at 2 ohms. I will be hooking it all up this week and i will post back up to tell how hard it hits. Also got rockford fosgate 2 gauge wires with it all.

Once I get the money, 2 12" 2-ohm dvc alpine type-r's, 2004 edition. So those are 300 watts rms each. Then I'm going to get the alpine amp that pushes 600 watts at 2 ohms, not sure of the name, its in the V12 series.

Sounds like it should be a good setup. I got the 2005 editions that are 500 RMS from onlinecarstereo.com. They ran me 314 for 2 12" 2-ohms and also bought the Alpine CDA-9853 HU that ran me 296. I liked onlinecarstereo.com, they had quick service and replys to my emails and if you order over 100 dollars all the shipping is free.
