Hi friends.. Has anyone replaced their gas cap with a Stant locking one? I was wondering if there is any way to attach that tether to the locking one..... or did you simply cut the tether off altogether.
It looks to me that once the tether is cut, it is ruined; so I was wondering if anyone has ever done this and if there is anything I am overlooking.
I did save the Stant cap off my old Oldsmobile, but it unfortunately does not fit my GT1, so I guess I'll soon be heading to WalMart to see if they carry them.
I hope I asked this question in the proper place; my apologies if I am posting this in the wrong area of the forum.
Many thanks!

So you bought a GM locking gas cap for your GA. I got one too. The new cap came with the tether because that's the whole thing. If the tether is cut, you can still use it, but it won't be hanging on the gas door you know?

Hi Yun... No, I didn'y buy one yet. I just returned from Walmart, and they didn't have the correct one for my GT1. They did have a few other ones though. If it wasn't so darn hot and humid here, I would have zipped over to Advanced Auto Parts whai is also here in my hometown; I'll head there early tomorrow morning.
I just looked at that factory cap again.... I wish I could have the locking one tethered too, but now that I look at it more closely, I don't think that is possible. Looks like once that tether is cut, it is ruined. Oh well; no problem.... I just wont have a tethered one, lol....
Next project is splashguards too. I think I'll get those from a P.F.Y.C. website that I just found. Maybe that website might be cheaper than the factory G.M. splashguards that my local G.M. dealer (might) have... didn't check that yet though.
This factory Delco radio is getting on my nerves too. It is just terrible on mid & treble frequencies; and too damn heavy on the deep, low bass. Typical of G.M. and Delco, I guess. It is so difficult to try and balance out the proper frequency response.
I do know this radio is coming out some day, lol... I just hope I don't screw up any alarms or chimes, or theftlock (whatever that is..). I'm also looking at some Alpine speakers for the doors and rear lid.
Has anyone tried to improve their audio by replacing just the speakers; but leaving in the Delco head unit? I'm wondering if that is worth a try, and if anyone has done that.
Take care, Yun... nice chatting with you.

I got my locking gas cap on pfyc.com. I think you need to buy the GM gas cap because they will come with tether to fit your gas door.
Do you have factory Monsoon system? If so you are going to have hard time trying to get aftermarket speakers to work with your factory headunit. Something to do with wierd wiring. It's something to ask in audio section.

Hi Yun, and thanks so much for that info! I am not sure if I have that monsoon, but I don't think so. The car is a 2000 GT1; I'm not sure if Monsoon was available in 2000.
The G.M. factory radio has great reception and I like the steering wheel controls, so I was hoping to keep it and just upgrade the speakers. But apparently, speakers alone might not give me the desired performance.
This radio pushes out more than adequate lows, but terrible on treble.
I'll probably browse around the audio forum here and see what I can learn.
Thanks for telling me about the G.M. gas cap; if that comes with the tether, I'll maybe get one. If not, that is o.k. too... not really that important to have that tether although it is handy.
Many thanks my friend.. take care.

jesus tommy your polite lmao. alot of people just swap out there speakers cause there strapped for cash or dont want to go to the hassle of doin a head job. however the head is what controls your speakers. get a decent headunit then some decent speakers and you will be pleasently surprised by the whole night and day aspect of the 2. if you want some advice on the head and speakers hit me up on aim phatbeatzcavy i happen to have a friend who owns a shop (whom i am sponsered by ) that will give you a good deal on your audio if you want.

Hi beatz... I am polite? Oh man, I hope that is a good thing, lol!!!
Actually, I'd really consider replacing the head unit too, but I read on some other posts that you must be careful not to screw up some kind of alarm wiring. (theftlock maybe?) As I bought the car only six days ago, I haven't had time yet to fully study the radio and/or replacement stuff yet. My nephew told me that he would help me out, so I should be all set... but thank you very much though for your offer, beatz.
Have a great weekend everyone!

yes if you dont have the correct harness you will loose the factory chime (no big deal if you ask me ) however when i got all my audio in i used a harness that would replace the factory chime and send it to the digital interface (part of my harness ) and it would sound off a chime telling me wheather or not something was on or needed to be checked. but like i said if you need anything just email me i tend not to check the site often. and yes lol being polite is a very good thing.

Hey Tommy, If you are just looking for a cleaner and clear sound think about adding a pair of tweeters, this will improve your imaging dramatically, and will allow you to hear your higher frequencies above the bass and midrange sound. You may even find that you need to lower your treble a little at higher listening volumes.

Hi Mark; thanks very much! Do you mean to add a pair to the existing ones in the window/pillar area? (those tiny factory ones)
Or do you mean to actually add another pair.
That's a good idea; I never thought of that and will look into it.
I have since read some old posts about possible ohm mis-match stuff if I were to replace only the door/rear deck speakers, and leave the existing factory head unit. I am not too experienced in that department, so I think I had better research that a bit.
This factory unit is just impossible to balance the proper frequency response; way too much low end bass. I never cared for factory Delco radios for that reason. You would think they could finally have some proper audio company make a decent sound system for a change. I think they think that people only want pounding bass, but I want the entire audio spectrum; not only the bass.
My radio is the one with the graphic equalizer (year 2000 Grand Am Gt1); so I don't think it is a Monsoon.
I also researched on Best Buy and Circuit City websites for Metra speaker adapters, but the two stores close to me do not have it.
If it is possible, I was leaning to replacing the door speakers with 6.5's; if they fit with the Metra.
Has anyone else done this (6.5's), and do they fit o.k.?
Thanks Mark for your reply; have a great weekend.
