Hey guys, I'm new here and I am looking to buy a 95 Grand Am SE. It's a nice little red coupe in OK condition for $1300(USD). The only problem with it is that I cannot figure out the exact miles because of the speedometer. The needle covers up the very left digit for the odometer, and I cannot tell if it has 79,000 or 179,000.

There are also 2 other Grand Am coupes I could choose from, a teal 92 SE and another teal one, but I'm not quite sure on the year for the 2nd teal one. The only interior problems I have seen with these cars is something missing from the interior, like the vent cover for the AC on the red one, and a knob on the teal ones.

But I am really interested in these Grand Ams, but I don't know anyone who owns an older one, so I'm asking you guys how good and reliable are these cars?

It really depends. I own a 95 se and aside from a busted alternator, which is to be expected, I have had no problems. I do have only 75K miles, which should be taken into account.

It really depends on what engine/trans the car has.
Avoid the 2.3L "Quad OHC" (8th VIN digit "3") - especially the 92. (95 won't have this engine tho)
I would also avoid the 3.3L V6 (92-93) - the transmission is a common source of problems.

IMO the 2.3L "Quad 4" DOHC (VIN "D") is a reliable choice, as well as the "3100" V6 found in the 94-95.

In other words, the 95 would be the best choice amoung the list. Other than alternators and things I broke while racing, it's never missed a beat in 143K miles.
