View Full Version : Cleaning reverse lights?

Ok. So.... my reverse lights (mounted in the bumper) look like hell. They are very dirty and condensation makes it worse.
Has anybody tried to remove the lense on the unit? I realize it's one unit...but I thought somebody might have tried to remove the lense. If so...how did you do it? Is it even possible?
Not only are mine dirty....they are black, inside. I want to paint them silver if it's possible to remove the lense.
Feedback would be appreciated.
This the good one.
See what I mean.

I also would love to know this, as mine are kinda getting crappy and retaining water, as well.
I hear its a rather common problem on 99-05's, hope someone else knows.

How's it held on? COuld you heat it and then seperate it? Paint in and silicone it back together? Can't hurt to try.. go to a junkyard and get a set to try it on :)

I tried to heat them, then pry them apart. No luck. I worried about breaking them so I didn't pull as hard as I could have. I might just go out and buy a new set....once I find out how much they are.
If I do buy a new set....I'll still try to seperate the old ones....just to see if it can be done.

Or.. if you're looking for an instant fix.. get some tint film and cover them with that :)

you could also just get new ones at the junk yard, mine were filled with gravel and i did remove them, you can get in there with something like a pencil, they come out pretty good but mine still had black in there. the junk yard gave them to me for $2. plus took them off the old car and put them on mine. p.s. i love being a woman!

when I first got my car, I thought it was some kind of mold/mildew so I sleaned the housing with degreaser, bleach, and soap....didnt do too much. Perhaps if you got in there with a super-flexible toothbrush or something by going in thru the back (with the unit out and the bulb out)

Although mine are clean, I looked closely at them today just for the heck of it; and I cannot figure out how to take them out neither......

They come out from the inside of the bumper. Two speed nuts on plastic posts.

Hi Jim... Do you mean you can get access to the speednuts by reaching up in back of the bumper ? Or do you mean that the bumper must come off ......

Many thanks! I will do that tomorrow if the rain ever stops here in New England. Gonna have to build an ark pretty soon, lol....

... I didn't read the entire thread but I thought about this a long time ago but I'd be surprised if someone else didn;t already think of it ... why not simply use a Baby Bottle Brush? :)

Hi Kelly... That's a damn good idea! I've got no babies here yet; never married yet, lol.......
Oh well, I guess I still have a little time left for that. (barely, lol)
Probably a good thing they make Viagra !
(a little humor never hurts..)
Oh boy; maybe I should head over to the "old guy's" section....
Hey, are you getting all this rain up in N.S. too ?

We had rain for what seemed like a week but it ended just a couple days ago ... listening to the weather tonight, it seems like it is coming back though :(

Man, we are getting enough rain to last till next year! About 8 inches over the last couple days; another 3 inches coming by the weekend.
Well, I get a free car wash though......
