I know this TOPIC has been discussed many times before, but I did some experimenting (i guess thats the only way to find real answers, ;-) ) and removed the piping from the Ram Air cover to the airbox. I have to say I noticed a slight difference in how the car sounds and pulls. I was looking at the design and decided I wasnt taking full advantage of my k&n drop in because of the long tubing before the filter. It now has the "deeper intake" sound due to better flow, and my butt dyno shows it pulls a little harder.
I know someone had mentioned somewhere that it would make no difference having the tubing on or off, but it looks like it helped a little for me. The only thing I dont like about it, is the inlet on the airbox where the tubing used to be is only INCHES from the crossover pipe for the exhaust. This is where i'm hoping the remainder of the Ram Air intake pieces I left there will help by keeping the engine a tiny bit cooler.
This isnt how i'll leave my intake setup (i'll eventually go to a cone filter next to the battery), but I thought someone here might be interested in these facts. Discuss.
Edit- I dont think removing the splash guard will make a difference in engine cooling, but I could be wrong. it doesnt appear like it would.
