View Full Version : Removing Ram Air piping w/ K&n

I know this TOPIC has been discussed many times before, but I did some experimenting (i guess thats the only way to find real answers, ;-) ) and removed the piping from the Ram Air cover to the airbox. I have to say I noticed a slight difference in how the car sounds and pulls. I was looking at the design and decided I wasnt taking full advantage of my k&n drop in because of the long tubing before the filter. It now has the "deeper intake" sound due to better flow, and my butt dyno shows it pulls a little harder.
I know someone had mentioned somewhere that it would make no difference having the tubing on or off, but it looks like it helped a little for me. The only thing I dont like about it, is the inlet on the airbox where the tubing used to be is only INCHES from the crossover pipe for the exhaust. This is where i'm hoping the remainder of the Ram Air intake pieces I left there will help by keeping the engine a tiny bit cooler.
This isnt how i'll leave my intake setup (i'll eventually go to a cone filter next to the battery), but I thought someone here might be interested in these facts. Discuss.

Edit- I dont think removing the splash guard will make a difference in engine cooling, but I could be wrong. it doesnt appear like it would.

Keith,

I think I would leave the Ram Tubing hooked up. There's probably is an increase in air flow, but you are also getting hotter air from the exhaust manifold. I believe the 'concept' of ramair is to get colder air into the manifold.

I have a cold air box from Dr Speed. There's a sheild that blocks the heat from my cone filter. I also still have my ramair tubing in place.

well once I get my next paycheck i'm going to make a homemade WAI and stick the cone filter where the airbox is. This is just temporary info that someone might be able to use.

i just now put cold air intake on my ga i tolk off the suck box and well all of the old air intake i ran an oversised cone and a strt pipe rite to my in take and wow man this alone gave me 12 horse power and droped my rpms by 3 grand at 65 mph

Doing any mods to the engine won't effect your rpm's at all when cruising at 65...thats determined by your transmission gearing.

I guess that activated the secret hidden 5th gear

I have the exact same setup as you Faslanev6 (K&N drop in filter, and removed ram air tubing), theres a slight sound difference. it just sounds like moving air, but I honestly haven't noticed a performance gain.
I'm ordering my cold air stg. 3 from dr. speed at the end of this week! yay for me

Yeah I have piping i'm just waiting for couplers and i'll have a custom CAI. :)

Yes, definitely go with the CAI. When I did my CAI some of the couplers pep-boys sent me were the wrong size, so I had to wait for my new ones to get in. In this time I just dropped the K&N on the "ribbed for her pleasure" tube. Drove like that for a few days till I got my new couplers. That was an improvement over stock and when I got the CAI in it was definitely an improvement over WAI. Plus the sound is cool =P

I mean don't expect any gains that will throw you to the back of your seat, but its a nice little mod.

And the Ram Air on the GA is just a gimmick, its still restricted by all the piping and the stock air box. Plus since the engine is transversely mounted its not even a straigh shot to the TB.
