Hi,
I just did a spark plug change on my 99 GA 4 door. on the left side spark plug (engine belt side), I found that oil has for some reason gotten into the plug. When I pulled the old plug, it was coated with oil. The 2.4L had been somewhat hesitant and fuel economy was bad and still is now after the tune up. What might help stop the oil from getting into the plug?
Thanks,
Luke

Where is oil? On the top (outside) of the plug? Or on the tip inside the engine?
If it oil getting into the top of the plug, check the timing cover, oil cap, and oil hoses for leakage that could collect in that area. If it's the plug tip in the cylinder, your rings are going... it would be wise to do a compression test... it may be time for an engine overhaul.

Its on the tip of the plug as well as on the outside, there are other places close to the outside of the spark plug that is full of oil as well. The other 3 plugs are perfect though. The engine still runs fine but the gas mileage is really bas, about 4 days and I need to fill the tank, I've only been driving in NYC so thats MUCH less than 100 miles a day more like 30 miles a day, and the only accessory is the A/C which is usually on the first fan speed so it is low.

By the way,
I'm running AMSOIL 10W30 with a AC DELCO Ultraguard Gold (UPF44) filter. Regular changes 3 months regardless of mileage(many times its even less than 3k miles but I change it anyway since this is the only car I have:) .

Sounds like you potentially have a leak coming from the cam towers somewhere, and is dribbling into that first spark plug.... Clean it all up everything.... drive for the day, and check the plug again, and check all around by the cam towers.... Check for any new residue... if there is anything coming from the cam towers you'll know it's those that are leaking...
if there is nothing visually oil wise, puddling, whatever... Take out the plug and check if the plug itself has any new oil on the tip....
From there you should be able to figure out if it's your rings in that cyl... or if it's a leak coming externally from the motor.
also make sure your oil cap is on tight.

offtopic for this, and directed towards Matt95GT...how much is an engine overhaul do you think for a 2.4 and what would it fix/cover?
thanks,
Dan

^Depends who does it, how long it takes, and what parts are replaced. I'd guestimate $800 to $2000. Prolly on the high side of that... I paid $850 (7 years ago) for cylinder head rebuild on a GM V6... the bottom end will take more time.

why not just get a new engine dropped in? A 2.4 wouldn't be that much, and in better condition than mine. How good would the engine be after the overhaul? I think you could say my brother had it done, because he had a cylander head replaced, I dont know if you would technically call that an overhaul, and it got 50 thousand more out of the car, but it wasn't too healthy. I don't know, I guess I just wan't as much information as I can get on the topic (ENGINE OVERHAUL to refresh everyone's memory)
Thanks,
Dan

Did you do the compression check yet? Or any other investigation on the oil buildup? Do that first before determining fix vs replace, and keep in mind you won't know the complete history of any replacement engine. It's really up to you to determine.

I got a refurbished 2.4L for my car, it was ripped out of a 98 GAGT. now, that being said, it cost me 700$ for the motor, and nearly 2K in labor and other parts for my mechanic to install it any everything. (I spun bearing #3)
