View Full Version : How many RPM's is your GA pulling?

I was being a gas miser earlier, accelerating with nothing over 2,000 rpms, took forever, but got to 70mph and locked the cruise on. Just between 2,000 and 2,100 rpms. I just wondered what the other GA's pull, especially the SE with it's 3.05 gearing. Post up. :)

... under 2K, IIRC

AT 75 almost 2 1/2 grand
accelerating with nothing over 2,000 rpms ???? I don't think I have ever done that once in my life. LOL
Strange thing is I will go past red line when shifting into 2nd and it's an auto.

Ditto Chain, lately I've been hittin the middle of the red if i slam the gas.
But, at the same time, I have been trying to keep it under 2k RPMS at all times, but it's real hard to do from 1st to 2nd.

Dont know, I'm always on my bike :P But thats usually at about 4 or 5k if you care :D

when i could almost afford the gas if i went 70 it would pull 2100 rpms...
now that i am trying to save gas *unless its some punk trying to impress his girlfriend or something in their little pos neon* ill creep on the speed limit and go as slow as possible getting up to it.

i try to keep my 2.4l below 3k but I dont have the control. most of the tim eim shifting at 4k. but on the freeway, i suusaly go 80 and it sat about 2600rpms i think
Bjornboy81

I'm keeping under 2500 accelerating and under 70mph on the freeway. It's not so much the rpms, but the wind resistance, that kills gas milage on the freeway.

the ga SE V6 crusied at 120KPH at 2K. GTP cruises at 110KPH at 2K PRM

accelerating under 2500RPMs???? I thought I accelerated pretty normally, not gunning it or anything, but I would have said I always clear 3k. Highway/interstate speed (~70mph) I'm sitting around 2100k.
Good thing I don't have a manual...they're supposed to be better for mileage I hear, but I don't think that counts if its a little prism (my wife's old car) and you can't have any fun below 4k RPMs.

I usually dont let it get above 2500 - 3000 when accelerating. On the highway I go about 75 and its at 2000 - 2100ish
a-brat
09-02-2005, 10:06 AM
around 3000 RPMs. up to 70 - then I satay around 2500 and cruze. I did not know that was "creeping"; thats how I drive normaly.

09-02-2005, 10:39 AM
ya, @ 75 mph with the 16 inch wheels the SE should cruise exactly at 2,000 rpm. However i do about 60 mph on the highway (about 95 km/h) and cruise at 1600 rpm. So thats about a...20% difference.... now thats one helluva diffference.
Chain

Ok I check it today coming home. No way in hell can I keep it at 2000 rpm.
If I try really hard I can keep it at 3000 rpm.
Normal is about 4000 rpm and that is just normal not getting on it.
At 75 I am hitting almost 2500 rpm. I need another gear. :)
NO I can not drive the speed limit. I need to be in front.
I do not know why it is just the way it is :chain:

with my 2.4 I keep it under 2500. 2k is too hard. And if you floor it, the 2.4 will go into the next gear at 6300. I ease off the gas at 5600. At 75 my 2.4 is turning 2300.
Now the malibu is easy to keep under 2k.

My tire pressure is at 37 psi, I shift at around 2200 rpms, and right now im getting 30 MPG...and thats city driving. Yeah, I like manuals.

Jay, I am basically shifting right around those shift points as well. Now if I am going downhill or if I am on a flat road with no traffic, I shift as early as 1500 when I am not running the air. But for me, the 2000rpm shift point is the norm.
My tires are at 40psi. I get around 34mpg for a mix of 75% freeway/25% city driving. And that is doing the speed limit on a 65mph freeway.
You hit the nail on the head. Manuals are great.

i need to check my tire pressure. and since my a/c blower motor is out, i can only use the low settings, so i bet that is saving me a little bit of gas. i just got 24mpg this fill up. not too bad, but if i start shifting it at 2200-2500 id be doing better.

I usually don't pay attention but Ive started to accelerate slower and Im sure its around 2500 or so. We were too busy at the dealership yesturday so I pulled my car in my bay and checked tire pressure and put it to around 34 or so psi. MY tires say 40 max but didn't want to put them that high.

Just filled up @ 25 mpg, all city driving :) ... and now i've started accelerating under 2000 rpm's, man is that hard to do.. I usually cruise at 70 mph, and it's just at 2000 rpms at that speed.

I tried shifting at 2000 last night on the way home from work. It reminded mre of a eighteen wheeler. I usually shift at 3000-3500 in the lower gears and it decreases as speed increases. I'm getting 33-34MPG with a 2.2 with 5 speed.
I checked my speeds/revs in fifth on the highway last night.
50 MPH / 1850 RPM
55 MPH / 2000 RPM
60 MPH / 2200 RPM
65 MPH / 2375 RPM
70 MPH / 2750 RPM

I have to agree, its hard to accelerate on an auto without going too far over 2k rpm.
Does anyone know how much of a gas tank the 96-98 GA's have with the 2.4(if makes a difference)? If I knew the exact I would start seeing how many miles to the gallon Id get
Chain
09-03-2005, 09:50 PM
You don't need to know the tank size. Just clear your trip meeter to 0 when you fill up. Then when you fill up again. take the miles you went and devide that by how many gallans you put in the car.
BTW The 97 GA gas tank holds 15 gal.

:agree:
I've always wondered why my 94 Cavalier had a 15 gallon tank and my GA only has a 14 gallon.
I miss that Cavalier so much though, I remember going from Tipp City to Niagara Falls, ON on one tank of gas. Topped off when I got to town, topped off when I left town, and made it home on one complete tank. That's 425 miles each way. The GA was sucking fumes from Tipp to Gatlinburg TN, which was only 350ish, and I was going slower in the GA. I knew I should have kept that little car as a daily driver, that 5 speed owned. :)

my 99 2.4 runs 70 at about 2100, but i cannot drive at 2000RPMs or less, impossible for me. I usually shift at 3500-4000, and thats not flooring it either. Keeping up with traffic is more like it. I also threw a $20 glass-pack muffler on it, that saved me 3 mpg city, 5 on the highway. Sounds like a hole in the muffler, but i don't care.

Glass packs rule man. All I ever used. But we would get them hot then turn off the car fill it with water crack all the fiberglass. fire it back up and wahla Awsome loud sound.
All my cars sounded like straight headers. Just the way I like it. :)

 I've heard of people doing that kind of stuff. When I got my Borla, I had people tell me to take it to the car wash and spray it while it was hot to crack up the insides.... Sorry guys, the Borla doesn't work that way. :D

Ok, so I checked and mine shifts around 2500 at a normal city acceleration (auto).

Never paid a bit of attention to rpms and shift points. I just drive about 75 or 80 and get around 24 or 25 mpg in the gt. I always seem to be in a hurry and can't stand accelerating too slowly. My v6 se usually got around 27 or 29 mph.

don't know cause i only have a rpm gauge at the present time so i don't pay too much attion in it cause it's an auto i just count how many times it shifts.
lets see i have a 3.1v6 and it's a 15 gallon tank. if gas stays where it's at $2.69 $25 will give me a full tank.

Alright, so I did this test tonight....
75 - 2650
80 - 2800
85 - 2950
90 - 3100
Although I will be redoing this test, I know my tires are gettin a little low. And then I'll redo it again, once I get the exhaust cut out off of Ant. :)

Doing any performance mods will not change these numbers. Unless you're rebuilding your tranny and changing gear ratios, they will stay the same. Hell, even adjusting tire pressure won't noticably change them (<2 rpms maybe) :)

I don't see how yall keep your RPMs so low----and how you gte such good MPG!
With my 2.2L 4cyl 2002 GA SE1, at 80MPH, I'm usually around 3K RPM...at 70 im about 2800.
I think im getting 20-22 MPG (i would say half highway / half city). I don't gun my gas really at all.
Any tips?

that sounds pretty bad.... how nasty is your air filter?? are you allways flooring the gas?? I drive the identical car and I get wayyyyyy better milage !! I get 42 MPG highway, accelerating normal, setting cruise at 110km/h.... around city isnt near that, but its better then what your gettin!

If you're talking about my Air Filter, it's fairly new. It's been like this ever since I got the car, but didn't think anything of it til i read this thread.
I don't floor the gas at all, I don't accelerate faster than normal, ya know?

With my 97 3100, I get about 2000rpm right on at 120km/h (75mph) but my experience with 99+ cars has been a little different. I've driven a 1999 GT and a 2001 SE both with 3400s and I recall not being able to get that low at 120km/h--both the 5th gen GT and SEs were a little over 2000 rpm IIRC.
As for letting the tranny shift at 2000rpm, I don't think it is that hard to do--when the car was new (and probably for the first 3 years of owernship or so) that's how I'd drive almost all the time. I did start driving a little bit differently later on but now with gas prices so high I'm kinda trying to keep it under 2k in normal driving as well.
