Hey, How's it goin'?
I have a little problem(BIG!). My water pump gasket is leaking and I thought I would pull it and do the repair but it looks like I have to pull the engine to get it. It's a 97 GT 3100. Until now I haven't had to do anything on the pulley side of the motor. Anyone know how to go about this?
Thanks
Nick

Ok u have to take the belt off the pullys and the pic I have up where the red arow is u have to take that off and theres 5 bolts under that holding the water pump on. Its about hour job I just did my water pump on my 98 the other day. Hope this helps u out.

Maybe I don,t what I'm saying ,But I think it is one piece and attached to the block just above the crankshaft and it is attached to the part you are pointing to.

Yea the gasket that is leaking is behind the water ports where it attaches to the block just above the crank pulley. Is this the Timing chain cover or a huge water pump? Sorry for the dumb Questions but I rarely had to do anything to this car other than upkeep. My02 GP s/c 3800 I know like the back of my hand.

The water pump itself is somewhat circular and held on by less than 6 bolts; Just look at the area, dont think in complicated terms, and you'll see how easy it is to take off.
BTW, its not the gasket thats leaking, its the water pump. Happens all the time with the 3.1 liter.

Thanks guys! I'll be soooo happy if thats it! But it looks dry there Maybe it's running down from there but it doesn't appear to be and it's definately not the intake or the heads. I took the shrouds off of th bottom and pulled the top motor mount. the engine is very clean. I'll go check again. By the way very bad lookin' rides. I have a 2002 GTP doing low 14's. But more mods to come!

Take the 4 bolts out of here and ur water pumps under that. Feel around the bottom of this pully and see if its wet and if it is then u need a water pump.

It's not the water pump. It's the housing where it attaches to the block. the gasket is leaking just above the crank flywheel. It looks like a 2 day job to me. Plus I already cracked a 15mm and a 13mm socket, craftsman,.

Well I did it! It was the timing chain cover. I new it was going to suck, but once I got that dumb ass moter mount off it was all smooth sailing. Good thing I have craftsman tools I just replaced 2 sockets that I got 32 yrs. ago! well I clocked it at 10hrs start to finish. Wouldn't want to pay those labor charges! 10 bucks for the new gasket. I had to raise the engine on the pulley side to get some of the bolts.and the crank flywheel came right off with my 5-8" puller.
