View Full Version : I am an idiot sometimes....

Hi friends... Man, I did a real stupid thing here. I thought I'd share it in the hopes it might be some kind of eye-opener type thing, and maybe it will stop somebody else from doing what I did.
To make a long story short, I was watering some plants with the watering can. The sun was out and the car was quite hot. Well, I got this idea to pour some leftover water on my windshield so I would clean the window and save a few squirts of washer fluid.
Well, you guessed it..... a large crack in my windshield. Apparently the cold water reacted with the hot windshield and made a 16 inch crack in the windshield.
Fortunately, I have 100% glass coverage on my car insurance policy, so it will be replaced on Thursday for me at no cost to me at all. The glass company is even coming to my house with a mobile van, so the replacement will be installed right here at home.
Just thought I'd share that bit of news with you so you don't get the idea to clean your windshield with a watering can on a hot day.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm "cracking" up here, lol.......

Yup... Could have been worse. I never would have guessed that something like that could happen. Maybe it was like a "shock" thing; from heat to cold.....
Well, that's what I have car insurance for. It is all covered, so I feel a bit better.
I actually heard the crack before I saw it. As I poured the water, I heard a crack, but didn't really see it until I sat inside the car; where I crapped my pants when I noticed it, lol.....
Oh well; just thought I'd post it here so nobody else does something like that.
Thanks for the comments and sympathies guys. I feel more comforted now. Take care everyone.

Thats why they say not to put hot water on your windows to defrost them in the winter

That sounds like something my brother would do.

LOL .... I have no idea why it happened. Maybe the glass was weak to begin with. but the windshield was very hot, and the water was well water; ice cold. It must have been a freak thing; some kind of instant contraction... very wierd.
Yup Katie... we have glass coverage here in Massachusetts; not sure about other states though. I was covered under the 'cpmprehensive" part of my policy. You probably have the same on yours too.
Well, gotta hit the sheets here...maybe I'll dream about glass tonight instead of counting sheep !!!

Dude, that SUCKS. Something crappy like that happened to me before. We have an electric stove. It's the one with the coiled burner things on top. Anyway, my girlfriend had baked some brownies the night before and they were sitting on the back burner still in the thick glass pyrex dish. Well, I decided to cook something to eat and I thought I turned on the front burner but accidently turned on the back one. I started smelling the chocolate burning so i grabbed a towel and picked up the pyrex dish real quick with it. Like 3 or 4 seconds after I took it off the burner, it exploded. It literally exploded and blew glass EVERYWHERE, including my face. I was lucky not to get hurt but I never knew that glass could actually explode like that. It was pretty freaky. Scared the shit out of me.

I'm really baffled too. I am gonna ask the guy from J.N. Philips Auto Glass about this, and ask him if this is something very rare.
They are replacing the windshield on Thursday, and I'll post back here and let all of you know.
I would bet that my windshield was maybe a weak one, or maybe even flawed somehow.
The only good thing is that the glass only cracked, and didn't shatter into billions of pieces. The other good ting is that the crack is about 18 inches long, because the car insurance company insists that cracks "less than a dollar bill's length" should be repaired, not replaced. I have no idea how the heck a crack can be repaired, but that was what the lady told me...
Take care everyone...talk to you later.

Hi again friends... Here is an update from my earlier posts. The glass company just installed the new replacement; they did an outstanding job, by the way... not even a fingerprint left behind.
Anyways, I asked him if this is rare or common to have a windshield crack from having cold water poured on it on an extremely hot day.
He advised that yes, it is quite common IF you have a pre-existing small stone chip in the windshield beforehand. He then told me to come over and look closely with him..he said he would bet I have a tiny chip along where the crack started.
We looked, and I'll be damned.... a very tiny stone chip at the exact spot where the crack started. He said the crack always starts at the chip. That chip was so small you couldn't even feel it when you ran your finger over it......that tiny.
So, just thought I'd pass my experience along to you in the hopes it doesn't happen to anyone else. Luckily my insurance covered 100% of it.
Oh, by the way.... I couldn't believe it, as they have a certain way to remove the state inspection sticker from the bad windshield and put it onto the new one. Not even a wrinkle or tear on the sticker; looks as thought the sticker was originally installed to the new replacement.
Take care everyone..... and don't crack up like I did, lol.....

Funny you mention it, I had the opposite happen to my old GA in the wintertime; it was quite cold out, but the car engine was warm, I turned on the defrost I hear a THUNK! noise and a crack up the winshield, which also started from a stone chip waaaay down in the cowl.
Tommy00GT1

Yup.. those stone chips can be a real bugger... I can't believe how tiny my chip was. But the glass installer spotted it right away; I guess they have a trained eye for that stuff.
I guess from now on, I'll settle for just using my windshield washers instead of the cold water route, lol......
Take care Jay....

there was one day not to long ago in i beleive march where it was so cold that hot water would be cold by the time you could get back out.... my solution was a blow torch... melted the lock and got in.... couldnt go anywhere because there was still 1/4 inch of ice covering the car.... but it was alot easier to get off once the car was running...
that also gave me the brite idea to put a door unlocker button in the trunk... after messing with the wires, and getting another switch that idea came to life and it saved me a few times! (to bad i no longer have that car :( )
but id never thought water would of cracked the windshield.... washing a car like somoene else said and its never happened to anyone i know.

Me too... Never would have guessed that neither. I never knew there was a tiny stone chip there also. the glass man said that was what contributed to the cracking... a very tiny weak spot already existed, and the shock from "hot to cold" was enough to cause the crack.
Pretty neat idea with your door unlocker button in the trunk !!!!! I should condider something like that too, as the winters here in New England can be a real nightmare sometimes...

well the unlocker was in an 84 Olds Delta 88.... it still had one of those covers that slid to the side to uncover the actual lock... which kinda helped it from freezing... not sure how practical it would be in newer cars that dont have anything to that nature...

We have a nice crack in the 00 GTP's windshield now, about a month ago or so, it was going through a no-touch carwash, and the cold water hit and did the same thing for the same reason, an existing stone chip. Sucks, especially when you have a HUD that requires a special windshield. Insurance in Ohio doesn't necessarily cover it either. 300 coming out of our pockets to fix it.

Oh, o.k. ... gotcha now. I was all confused, lol. Must be these damn middle ages creeping up on me, Brandon.
Well, been a long day here; gotta count sheep now; or maybe windshields, lol....
Take care buddy...

Oh man.... that blows bigtime, SilverGA2001. I'm not sure, but I think here in Massachusetts glass coverage might be mandatory. But I really am not positive about that...mine was covered 100% on the "comprehensive" part on my policy.
I wanted to ask the glass installer how much a windshield costs too, but it slipped my mind, lol.... But I see you mentioned $ 300.00, that was what I would have guessed too.
Hope you get yours fixed up soon...take care.. I think we both had better watch those damn stone chips !!!
Have a great weekend everyone.

I have full glass coverage in NY State. I had a windshield replaced on my '96 Achieva and was not impressed with the quality of the unit that was installed. If you looked across it, you could see waves in the outer edges of the glass.
I have a chip in my '02 GA windshield but I'm waiting till it gets worse before I get it replaced. If the crack/chip is in the line of sight, they will pay for it. I might have it done at the dealership to get OEM glass.
Many times at the store I could have used an "Unlock" button in the trunk. I don't have a remote so I have to dig the keys out twice to unlock the trunk and then the doors.
Another thing, cold water in Az. is not really all that cold. When I was there, the cold coming out of the tap was 85*. I didn't need any hot to take a shower and I was taking two or three a day.

Holy cow, Jim.. I guess the water here in Massachusetts is a bit colder, lol... I never measured the temp, but well water in particular is very cold.
I am not sure what kind of windshield was installed here for me... must be some aftermarket one I would guess. But I carefully inspected it, and all seems fine. Hey, at least no cracks, lol !!!!!
Believe me, I felt a bit better when the glass guy told me it definitely is common if a stone chip is present. I learn something all the time, lol...
The insurance companies here insist on repairing a windshield first, if the crack is less than a dollar bill's length. I have absolutely no idea how they can repair a crack, but luckily mine was 18 inches long so I didn't have to find out.
