View Full Version : Pontiac grand am 98 se 2.4 engine hesitation

Having trouble with my car. When it is on a red light or stop sign it
likes chokes like its not giving fuel. I tap the gas pedal and it
goes. I took it to the shop a couple of months ago to a merchanic and
he said it was the Egr valve. He cleaned it it looked dirty. So he
said, If it gave me more problems that i would have to replace it and
buy a new one.

Okay, I took it to a man who owns his shop next to his
house . This is what he fixed. He said there was a engine misfire
code 0451. Multiple cylinder misfire. He replaced the coil cover,
boot set, 1 spark plug #4 cylinder. Okay i tested out the car it runs
better. But still doing that hesitation again. Also, I was at the
grocery, I had the car at drive all of a sudden the car wanted to
stop .So i put the car on the neutrol and all of a sudden the rpm
started to go up about the number 6. So i decided to turn off the
car. Then restarted it and it turned back on. but still giving me the
hesitation . I ve noticed also when i start the car i have to give it
2 cranks then it will start after pressing the gas pedal 2 times.
Does this have something to do with the problem with the hesitstion
also? I went back to the mechanic and told him about the problem. He
said he coudnt find anything wrong. Please help me find this solution on my car ?

'Misfires' are generally P0300 thru P0312.

All generic OBD-II codes (excludes manufacturer-specific codes) can be found at http://www.obdii.com/codes.html :

P0451 = Evaporative Emission Control System Pressure Sensor Range/Performance.

I don't know 4-cyls, and I don't know where this Pressure Sensor is located.

Frankly, your problem seems more like TPS (throttle Position Sensor).
Or maybe the above pressure sensor has similar symptoms, I dunno.

In any case, find a GOOD mechanic instead of throwing a few bucks at shade-trees.
Anybody who says he "..coudn't find anything wrong.." when there's clearly a problem shouldn't be working on your car.

At the very least, go to a Checker/AutoZone/whatever and borrow their OBD-II Scanner (usually no-cost rental, they just need a cash or credit-card deposit).
Follow directions and plug it into your socket, then report back here with current codes.

Until you scan the codes, don't disconnect the battery (that would 'clear' the codes if disconnected more than about 10 minutes).

Hello Rick, I have a no check engine light. Can i still use the obd-II codes to scan the codes. Will it give a reading on the code still?

No light Should mean no code. But a light can go on, then off and a code will still be stored.

I agree with Rick, that it sounds like the tps, the tps (throttle position sensor) tell the computer how much gas you are giving the motor. So if it is not working correctly, then the computer is getting the wrong info, so the air-fuel mixture is not right.

It could also be that the butterfly in the throttle body is not moving freely. If it sticks in spots cause it's dirty, then again the computer can not control the mixture going into the motor.

Either of the above would explain why the car reved so high, but then everything seemed better after the restart. Most of the time when a motor revs that high, that fast it's a vacuum leak. But a leak that caused that would not go away after a restart. But a bad signal from the TPS might tell the computer to do most anything to the rpms of the motor.

A good mechanic can check the tps with a OHM meter in just a few minutes. He/She can also pull the hose off the end of the throttle body and look at the butterfly pretty easy. To see if it's clean or dirty.

If both of those check good, next would be the Idle Air Control Valve or IACV. It also controls the air/fuel mixtures going into the motor. From what I read it sounds like something is messing up the air/fuel mixtures, that's why the power of the car changes. When the mox is right, the car has power, when it's wrong the motor runs weak.
