This one's got me stumped considering how easy it was supposed to be. While at a shop getting a transmission fluid flush I asked if I could get the sender installed at the same time. They told me there was no way to install it with what was included with the kit and that brazing a bung into the pan (suggested in the instructions) was out of the question. They told me I needed a t-fitting to tap into an existing fluid line.
I know the sender is 1/8" NPT. I'm just not sure what dimensions the rest of the t-fitting has to be. Autometer sells a temp manifold for such a purpose but it's basically an overengineered and overpriced t-fitting. Any ideas?
Do you know the diameter of the tubing that carries the fluid "from" the transmission to the "radiator"?
You need a tee with compression fittings on the opposite ends that will fit the tubing, and a 1/8" fnpt (female) on the third end. If the only tee you can find is 1/8" mnpt (male) on the third end, then you'll also need a 1/8" fnpt coupling.
I would suggest finding this in stainless steel, but brass will work. Also, the pipe threads will need to be doped. Copper pipe sealant will ensure electrical ground, but Teflon may be OK.
You should be able to find the parts at a good quality hardware store or an industrial supply house. Otherwise, check out http://www.mcmaster.com and do a search for compression fitting.
First though, you need to measure the size of the tubing to make sure you buy the right size fitting. Once you have the fitting, remove the compression nuts from each side. With the nuts off, you'll need to determine how much of the transmission tube to cut out and remove. DON'T USE A HACK SAW!!! Use a tubing cutter to cut and remove the section of tubing.
Install the fitting and cinch the compression nuts down tight. Make sure the tee is installed with the female (or male) end pointing down.
