Considering doing my own oil changes on my new GAGT.

The manual says 3.8L of oil with filter.

Is that right?

I think everyone uses 4.5 quartz.

I use about 4.4 - 4.5 Litres to fill my crankcase and filter. Your best bet: Add 4L, then check the level on the dipstick. If it's in the range, start the car for a moment to allow the oil to fill the filter. Then turn the car off and let it sit for a few minutes. Check the level again, and continue adding until full.

Thanks!

Do you use the stock size filter? Or the larger one?

I think the 3.4DOHC or another big V6 GM motor has a longer filter that fits perfect.

I used it on my 3.1L Sunbird all the time.

I use the AC Delco PF-47C filter, which is the OEM replacement. :) There is a slightly larger filter available, but I can't remember the part#.

I... almost remembered it but thats for something else lol *rolls eyes* Yeah i'm lame :( lol If you wanna save money in oil changes, go Synthetic. But remember you need a synthetic oil filter too. I went out and bought a reg. oil filter by mistake :-p

The long filter is a PF52C, It can be used anywhere a PF47C can be used unless there is a clearance issue. The only benfit is roughly about .25 of a liter more oil in the system

No need for a 'synthetic' filter. And realistically, synthetic oil is much more expensive than dino oil. I wouldn't say you'll save money on the =oil change, but perhaps down the road with decreades fuel consumption, and decreased wear on your engine. :)

More filtered oil is another benifit.

More oil in the filter before the pressure increases and the oil is diverted away from the filter.

Are you sure that's not the manual for your sunbird? The 3400 takes 4.3L (or 4.5 quarts) of oil, I've never seen a manual say otherwise.

According to GM Specs :)

Engine Oil with Filter
2.2L L4 ~ 4.8L (5.0 qts)
3400 V6 ~ 3.8L (4.0 qts)

It takes more than 3.8L with a filter, I can assure you of that. :)

Yea...I know!!

But the manual says otherwise...it's wierd. :???:

I've seen a few 3100/3400 in my day, and I know they use more than 3.8L of oil.

When I do my upcoming Oil change I'll fill her up with the 4.4L jug but I won't use it all....leave a bit in the jug...then I'll start her up and check the level.

I'm debating on whether or not I should use the larger Oil Filter or not. Don't know if the car will benefit from it...and if the dealership will make a stink about it. (warranty)

... of course it does, I was just showing that even the specs coming direct from the GM Technical Manuals can be wrong

They might've changed the size of the oil pan some time then 'cause my 2001 service manual really says 4.3L, 4.5 quarts.

What year service manual are you referencing Kel?

In considering what Ben said, this is what the 2001 says

Engine Oil
With Filter, 2.4L ~ 3.8 liters (4.0 quarts)
With Filter, 3.4L ~ 4.3 liters (4.5 quarts)

The part number in Purolator's number system is 10111 for the factory sized one or 24011 for the larger, no real reason to run a larger one, the engine was designed for the smaller one.

for interests sake the Fram numbers are 3387A and i believe the larger one is 3980 but it might be 3600 too, cant remember, either way, just use the smaller one.

Well, seeing that my recommendation would be to start by putting 3.8L like the manuals seem to indicate for your year and then check the level. If it's still low then you can go on to the 4.3L we're all using. Might be a good idea to notify GM if there is a typo in your year's manual.

Oh..it was supposed to be a joke.

Being a Canadian...Litres...ya know.

Like when my brothers Mazda buddies talk about their DOHC engines and I'm like:
"They put the Cams on top of the motor now?"
