View Full Version : Solstice turbo
Pontiac engineers ventured to the Nürburgring to take some hot laps in the hot version of the Solstice roadster. Several styling differences set this prototype apart as the turbocharged version of Pontiac's halo car. The high-performance additions to the Solstice clearly require more breathing ability. The large round lights set into the Solstice's bumper fascia - surrounded by bodywork on the standard 170-hp model - are set within additional honeycomb grillework on this prototype. Sharply sculpted edges outline the added grilles, giving more definition to the Solstice's face. The Turbo Solstice's more chiseled look is furthered by a deeper, squared-off jawline, which incorporates another thin air-intake slit at the bottom.
The changes at the rear are less pronounced: a subtle lip spoiler sets this more muscled model apart from the standard version. By applying a turbocharger to GM's 2.4-liter Ecotec engine, this Solstice will generate at least 240 horsepower, and rumors suggest it may even exceed 250 horses. Regardless of the final output numbers, this car should give serious competition to the likes of Mazda's new Miata, as long as the Solstice's final execution manages to live up to the promise of the car's sexy lines.

Thanks for the fine woody material!!! That thing is sexy! So long Miata, S2000, RX-8, hell this thing will even compete with the 350Z!

Well lets see, recently GM has put V8 engines in the Bonniville, Grand Prix, Imapal and IIRC even the MonteCarlo. They Supercharged the Cobolt SS and Ion Redline, and they even stuffed a 400hp V8 into a SUV. If this were 3 years ago I might doubt it, but I confident that we'll end up seeing some kind of force inducted Solstice.

I think I am the only one who hopes this WONT happen; A true roadster has equal power and suspension capabilities, 240+ HP will just overwhelm the chassis and sure it might be great on straightaways, but I think cornering ability will be hampered. The American attitude of "more is better" may just taint this jewel from GM. :sad2:
And yes, I am an automotive purist, and why I felt in my personal vehicle to leave the engine alone and concentrate on the suspension, a weak point of the vehicle. Hell, any GM car has a lousy, compliant suspension. Note the word compliant.

Oh it's very much a REAL idea and in the final approval stages. I must admit I was suprised back when Lutz first approved the idea of the Solstice all together, but here it is!
Definately be looking for the forced induction version!
Numbers currently indicate 235-240hp from GM

And that's what the aftermarket's for. I would love a little car that would beat the piss out of almost anything I come against. With just STB's + Eibach's I'm slightly nudging out stock WRX's when it comes to those hilly, windy roads that I love oh so much. But a straight away, I'm smoked.
As of yet, we don't know if there is / will be larger sway bars, strut tower braces, etc, etc, coming from factory for this yet. Sorry Jay, but this may be a little too early to call. Once we get all the specs, then we can judge :)
