Hard to say w/o hearing it myself. Could be a squeaky belt, could be a bad bearing on the alternator or on the tensioner pulley. Try some belt dressing and see if that helps at all. If it does, you might want to look at getting a new belt. Goodyear Gatorback belts are VERY quiet.

I have the same problem in my 99 se, and I am 90% sure it is the bearings in the tension pulley. I haven't gotten mine changed yet though.

Could be the belt or the pulley, but my car was making the exact same noise and it turned out to be the power steering pump.

... could any one of the things mentioned, but an easy check is to take a bar of soap and with the engine running, rub the soap on the underside of the belt ... BECAREFUL!!!!!!!! ... if the noise stops, the trouble is with your belt

For weeks I could hear a rattiling/chriping sound from where the belt and alternater was. The service place said it was the tension pulley, but toke it in yesterday and it was the belt tensioner . You could here it making a snapping noise and plus when you put your hand on the tensioner you could feel the snapping inside. The part is not expensive it cost 87.00 cdn and the car makes no noise now
