After fighting with tar on my white car for the last couple of summers, I have found something that removes it.

But here's what I tried first. Turtle Wax Bug and Tar Remover, Stoner's Tarminator and Gasoline. I finally grabbed my spray bottle of Fantastik and a course terry towel. It took a total of six hours to get both sides and my elbow grease is running low.

Tomorrow, mud flaps are going on.

Fantastik is what did the deed. You could also try 409 or Simple Green.

I don't know what the brown stuff is. I'm thinking its water based since tar remover and gas didn't cut it. Neither did my car wash soap.

Out my way, in the summer, they spray this thick black goo on the road and cover it with loose stone. Cars then drive over it and push the stones down. On a hot summer day, you can hear the tires hiss like when you are driving on wet roads. I thought the goo was tar or oil but now I'm thinking it's something else that's water based.

Fantastik does a great job but make sure you put a good coat of wax on afterwards :) ... surprised gasoline didn't work as it has always done the trick for me :) ... doesn't matter though as all that is of concern is that it is now GONE!! :)

Wow, quite a difference Jim. I also had some tar on my white GT1, and I used ArmorAll Multi-Purpose Auto Cleaner to get rid of it.... worked great.
I then followed up with a nice coat of Meguiar's NXT wax; superb stuff.

WD-40 also works good and easy to remove street tar, used it on my 03 Mitsu Eclipse, worked like a charm.

man i scrubbed n scrubbed w/ soap n water on my max (white)... im also thinkin bout gettin flaps considering the salt/dirty nasty snow is round the corner.... is it better to get ones from the dealer that are made to fit my car, or just some random ones from the parts store?

a clay bar probably would have removed that with less effort.
